What does "smart casual" mean?

At its simplest, shoes, trousers, something with a collar, no tie. Jacket optional. Chinos OK but probably not the skinny things my sons call chinos!

And stevek, you're right to a certain extent, you'll get away with jeans and a shirt if they're good jeans and a really really good shirt. (And as long as you're not in a golf club, but that's a different thread ...) Got to be a shirt though rather than a polo with denim, no matter how good the polo.

Depends on occasion and venue but almost without fail it would jeans, shirt and shoes.

Casual for me means trousers are not essential, smart means no trainers and a collar

Just because you wear 'brands', doesn't mean you dress well. I've seen plenty of blokes who've spent a fortune on what they're wearing and look awful.

You shouldn't just throw money at it

We had smart casual yesterday after a team event

Trousers, white shirt, club tie and jacket. Maybe not too casual but couldn't be wrong!

Don't be so conservative, a pair of mc hammer kecks (they are still trousers), a pilot shirt (available only in twos, from page 68 in the Sunday people) and a pair of stack heels. Mirrored noddy holder hat (optional), but not in the clubhouse.

There are basically 4 most used dress codes (fancy dress etc not included) and this is the one that can be most confusing, as the others are fairly obvious:
Casual - wear what you like
Smart Casual - You can't wear what you like, but you don't have to wear a jacket and tie.
Jacket & Tie - As it says
Black Tie - where you look like a waiter, or James Bond depending on how delusional you are.
For smart casual I would go for proper shoes, not trainers and smart trousers, not jeans. You may get away with a smart pair of jeans, but if the event is at a golf club, check if they allow jeans and if they do if they allow them in the area where the event is!
You think this is bad. Try being a woman. Not that I am one, but HID tells me it requires a new outfit every time.

Jeans, shoes, shirt (tucked in) and jacket looks naff, always has and always will.

Smart casual for me is trousers/ decent chinos, shoes (deck shoes or loafers acceptable), shirt (polo shirt ok if smart and not too garish)

Smart casual means jeans are allowed as far as im concerned. I will slit my throat before i ever wear chinos.

Had a smart casual event through work to celebrate an end of a contract

For me it was trousers shoes and shirt. Out of about 150 guys, I could only see about a dozen with jeans on

Tramps!!!!:D

Totally agree the jeremy Clarkson look has never looked good. If I am wearing a jacket then i will wear trousers

I hear you on that one mate. I saw a really nice pair of Golf trousers a couple of months ago. Went to the changing room tried them on and looked in the mirror. Oh my god i had picked up a pair of chinos.......

Hasten to say they went back on the rack.........;)

Taken from the internet, but pretty sound IMHO. I would not wear Jeans to a "smart casual" event.

:smirk:cravat instead of a tie, lighter cloth slacks, shirt top 2 buttons undone and a blazer instead of a tweed shooting jacket, anything less would not be smart or casual,or if you live down south the pair of jeans with the least paint on and the shirt that was ironed last
