Different age groups will give you different answers. Your club should have stipulated what their version of smart Casual is. For me, smart trousers and either a decent polo shirt or a.n.other shirt tucked in. Someone else will say its chino's etc... down to your club really.

In the context of the occasion - decide what it doesn't mean (what wouldn't be acceptable at all); then guess what it might probably mean; then dress up a little bit from there.

I tend to go with shoes that aren't trainers, a polo or shirt and chinos, but as hobbit said it will mean different things to different age groups

A question that has no answer to it. If someone told me it was smart casual I would be thinking about a smart pair of jeans with shoes and a tucked in shirt.

But if it was at the golf club I would just wear a nice pair of trousers and a nice polo shirt or maybe a shirt without tie. I would say wear clean golf clothing, but some of my outfits push the boundaries of good taste.

Would that be a tucked in checked shirt to go with the jeans.

To me it is trousers, shoes (not trainers or my usual Timberland Boots) and a shirt or polo shirt depending on the situation. It could also require a jacket with the shirt and trousers if the situation demanded it. Really is a very subjective area this and if in doubt I tend to dress smarter than I need to be rather than take a chance.
