• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

what do you do?

If I hit my 52 how I'd like to hit it then I'd be 9 yards short!

There's no chance that I'd play a new club or any other from that lie, top half of the ball only and knock it back on the green stuff :fore:

Not sure it was an obstruction. . It is moor land after all
Will need to ask the pro next time im up..

What would you have done? Regarding the new shiney dilemma

Since when has 'a lump of concrete' been something you would expect to find naturally in moorland? Or anywhere on a Golf Course!

Here's the definition of Obstruction!
<defn>
An “obstruction’’ is anything artificial, including the artificial surfaces and sides of roads and paths and manufactured ice, except:

a. Objects defining out of bounds, such as walls, fences, stakes and railings;

b. Any part of an immovable artificial object that is out of bounds; and

c. Any construction declared by the Committee to be an integral part of the course.

An obstruction is a movable obstruction if it may be moved without unreasonable effort, without unduly delaying play and without causing damage. Otherwise, it is an immovable obstruction.

Note: The Committee may make a Local Rule declaring a movable obstruction to be an immovable obstruction.

</defn>

So how would you describe 'a lump of concrete'?

The Rules aren't there just to punish you - but to make it fair to all players!

What does leather wedge mean ? Rip it ?
The guys had little sympathy for my new wedge and were grand masters In rules unlike myself. ..
They did pull me up for playing out of turn on the 13th and said they could pick up as the hole was won but they let it go..

You don't lose the hole for playing out of turn in matchplay - your opponents only have the option of making you play the shot again at the correct turn. See Rule 10-1c

No matter how sure someone is of a rule, never believe them unless you either know it to be true or see it in the rule book.

A little more specific the lump of concrete would be best described as the top of a buried boulder slightly off flush from rough I was playing out of...

Don't forget you can always declare your ball unplayable and take a penalty drop. Sounds like that may have been the best choice in this case if hitting it wasn't an option you wanted to take.

Thats 9yards past me..
Was trying to land it on a downslope in front of the green then hope for the run up to the pin at the back..

Can't be getting too precious about the condition of your irons in my mind. I just accept that they will get scratched and dented over time - and statistically that time could be my next shot - so whatever - they are lumps of metcal and a scratch or dent here or there isn't going to affect their playability. Bummer though when they do get dented or scratched.

Boulder is different from concrete - if anything, it's a loose impediment. Any 'relief' is by moving the LI, even if not particularly moveable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4lVCF8c5zk Also does actually need to be 'loose', which the boulder in that vid was, but doesn't seem as if the one in the OP was.

The cheeky mares... there was also an incident on 8th when matey stopped me before I hit his ball :o

He did you a favour on that one! http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Rule-15/

Btw. Worth noting that in a 4BBB Match, 'losing the hole' generally (there are a few notable exceptions) only means that the partner that made the breach is 'out of the hole'. I've seen several instances where the hole has been incorrectly claimed - for example when one of the guys plays the wrong ball.

That was good of him, and the right thing to IMO. Sounds like they were decent blokes but getting rules wrong happens far too often, myself included (occasionally ;)).

No reason to not have a rule book or the smartphone app, as they're both free. The rules quiz on the R&A site is good when you have a few minutes to kill.

Yeah I appreciated that one :smirk:

On the 15th I thought my ball went right into the jungle, they both helped look for it to no avail :rolleyes:
My pp gave them a gimme on the green maybe 3footer down hill then straight after missed a put for the hole and the 1 coming back for the half, then made him putt the same gimme and he missed.. we lost that 1.. much to the annoyance of my pp..
I went right again coming down the 16th looking for my ball found the 1 I lost on 15 playable right next to where they played their 2nd, I mentioned I found the lost ball previous and they both looked shepish:mmm:

I would have taken unplayable lie with penalty, with the description you describe it would be a hard shot to pull of successfully

Bit curious as to why you don't seem to be very knowledgeable on the rules seeing you play of 8, have you not been playing very long?

Thought everyone knew what a leather wedge is:)

Yes you're correct only joined my first club june 2013..
Knocked off 15 shots in 10 months too....

Wow that's some reduction in 10 months,well done,you must be a natural and that must be a forum record for the biggest cut in a season:D

Would endorse what Region says about rules, I have a look at the r and a rules quiz now and again, always learn something new.

The psychology of matchplay - never assume you will be given a putt by your opponents, no matter the situation or how short the putt. Often the opposition will be testing your mental strength by making you putt one you might expect to be given.

Congratulations on the win BTW

Push for abnormal ground conditions/GUR!

You mean try and cheat your way out of it??

From that position this is when it comes in handy to know exactly how far you hit wedges etc. in a position like that I'd be forgetting about going for the green and putting the ball into my favourite wedge distance, knowing I have a good chance of getting it inside 6 feet and a good chance at saving par.
