What do you do when the game beats you up ?

I've been playing some decent golf and striking it really well and so haven't been too fussed if the scores haven't shown this as much as I use to. I know it is in there and coming. Played well on Saturday and then the swing has gone completely on Monday and yesterday. It cost me a realistic chance of a top 3 in an honours board event (came 8th) and so I'll be hitting balls later to work out what is wrong and then playing a few holes to see how it goes on the course. I have to get to the bottom of it when I play badly or it nags away like toothache

I'm still reading "Golf is not a game of perfect" and I feel that while it's not improved my score it's definitely improved my attitude. As a consequence I'm enjoying myself an awful lot more :)

Oh goody I'm getting it for fathers day. If nothing else it will help me fall asleep reading it!!

I've been in a similar vein the last month or so Blade and I feel pretty much the same.

I'm striking the ball well enough but struggling to score. My main problem is adapting to the firmer conditions, couple that with a change of irons and I'm left scratching my head.

Once I adjust to the more penetrating flight of the Mizzys I'll be better placed to judge where to try and land the ball.

Here's hoping anyway

Blade, I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise to you and all the other golfers who have more than their fair share of bad luck.

I'm not generally a lucky person, but on the golf course I think I have used mine and a lot of other people's share of good luck for the foreseeable future.

I had a bad bounce yesterday that cost me a shot, but generally if I land in trees I'll have a shot or hit a horror shot and finish nicely.

Sorry. :o

Think G_mulligan summed it up tho Gary , it comes & goes & not many (including me ) come on here & report how lucky i was today , never apologise for luck ha , you can beat a good player , youll never beat a lucky one .. ha . just the day (last sunday) the unlucky bounces start behaving , the weather goes mental in the space of 2 holes ha .. guess thats why i have a day job ha ha

Replay a mental image of yourself winning the GM Centenary trophy last year, and remember there have been good times as well as bad!

Alternatively, if it's eating away at you, walk away for a week, two weeks or whatever just to 'reset'...

Very proud of the two trophys last year Jezz, Ballyliffin & Forrest of Arden . went to both places with low to no expectation , so maybe that the answer right there , no expectations ..

Cant take a break with K Club , Carton House & Mount Wolsey all to be played this month ,its very seldom golf gets to me & i know (hope) it will turn around , just feels at present me & golf are in round 9 & golf won the last 6 rounds comfortably ha ..

My approach is simple,

1 pint glass
4 shots of apple vodka
Half a fresh lime squeezed
Top up with ginger ale

And reflect on the banter during the round

I'm usually pretty good, I might have a swear here and there or talk to myself in the 3rd person at times "Oh Chris, what are you doing" but that's about it. I am however embarrassed to admit that for the first time on Sunday morning in the June medal, I duffed a chip on the 15th, twice and ended up throwing my wedge at my bag. Shouldn't have done it but it was better doing that than doing what I actually wanted to do.......wrapping my wedge around my playing partners face (he was a massive bell end). Nothing is more annoying than playing like a moron while your playing partners are boring, miserable and arrogant.

Lucky me, one of them has put his name down with us again in a couple of weeks time.....think i might be sick that day.

Sometimes I ring the Samaritans, but they just put on hold again...

Seriously, I don't do it for a living so I see little point in getting chewed about it. In 45yrs I've seen enough peaks and troughs to know next month will be better or worse depending on where I am in the cycle.

One thing's for sure, the Guinness always makes it feel better.

Heres my last four competition scores 27pts, 26pts, 23pts and 27pts.........now thats depressing

You should have come to Turkey with me last week. You'd have hammered me!!
5 rounds of golf on glorious courses and I played like an absolute knob.
And don't talk to me about bad luck. Of the two best drives I hit during the week, one rolled into possibly the biggest divot you have ever seen and the other hit a rake, bounced 90 degrees to the right and ended up in a fairway pot bunker that wouldn't have looked out of place at St Andrews.
I lost count of the number of times my playing partners during the week hit a pine tree and their balls bounced majestically out into the middle of the fairway, or at least playable in the first cut.
Mine? They would hit the same trees and always (always) bounced left or right into the crap, usually never to be found again and resulting in a blob.
On the last day, four of us drove off, all hit decent enough drives but rolled off the fairway to the right and under some pine trees. As we drove our buggies up towards the area they had ended up in, one of the guys said "I can see three that are in play, but one of them is stuck up a tree trunk".
I knew (and would have laid my last months salary on it) which one of them was mine before we even got there. And guess what? I was right.....

If this had happened early in the week when I thought I might have been in with a chance of being in the prizes I would have been really, really wound up.
As it happened, it was on the last day and I was in the "hackers group" just playing for fun really. So I laughed about it, and got on with it.
But I fecking hate this game sometimes. Somebody upstairs knows you are playing badly and wants to rub it in just a little bit more.

Golf winning 6 rounds out of nine will count for absolutely nothing if you can deliver a killer punch in the final round (as a wise sage once said...)

Thanks for the reminder Jezz. Just when I'd gotten over the mental trauma of losing on countback. My confidence is more unstable than the Greek economy and you send that bomb bouncing my way. On the plus side until you ruined it - I went out and played a practice game on my own yesterday and my golfing psyche was in a much better place. Played two balls on some holes and generally just worked on a few things. No-one behind me on the back nine but rammed in front so just took my time chipping and putting on each green. Hit the ball so much better than Tuesday and so the golfing corpse is still twitching and showing signs of life.

Heavy rain due this afternoon so giving it a miss today but might hit the range for a bucket instead later. Going to give my psychiatrist a call now and see if he can book me in!

I know this feeling as well. Been hitting the ball better than ever and trying to make the right choices but one thing or another gets in the way. I have become rather adept at a strong fade with 7 iron to get out from behind trees.

Now I'm focusing on what I'm doing right rather than wrong and trying to groove that. Coming out with the positives of a round and leave the bad on the course.
