What course would you love to play above all others?

Unless it was immediately pre/post the Masters I think Augusta would be a huge letdown and not just for the condition of the course/flora etc. Just look at the 18th on google, without grandstands etc it really falls flat as a finishing hole

Loch Lomond looked really cool when I saw it as a spectator and Kingsbarns appeals but I havnt seen it in the flesh

I know someone who has played Augusta and said whilst it was lovely it fell a bit short of his expectations

Being honest I'm not a fan of it and not a big fan of the Masters and how entries of a major can be determined by them alone

I've also always wanted to play there - looks like I'm finally getting the chance later this year. That's probably my most anticipated golf game of the year - more so than Trump or Birkdale that are also in the offing.

For the OP, however, it's a cliche but it probably has to be Augusta, just because of its iconic status and difficulty to get on.

If you need a playing partner Karen let me know! I have always wanted a go there!

i play with two guys who have played it and both described it as a bit of a field apart from a few holes.

But is this not the charge sometimes levelled at the Old Course.

Sometimes it is easy to overlook or miss the subtleties of a course.

Anyway it's still Dornoch for me.

As many have said already Pebble or Augusta for me

Going to the Ryder Cup later in the year, so hoping to take in a couple of the TPC courses while we're over there

i think it was how wide open it is without the crowds and stands

I would accept that having seen photos taken outside of Masters week. On the other hand I was told that it is impossible to appreciate the elevation changes until you are out there.

It's a long and ever changing list, but essentially:

The Old Course
Carnoustie
Turnberry
Troon
RCD
Pinehurst #2

Would add Augusta to the list for curiosities sake but I still think it's a bit of a theme park. That's only based on TV evidence so I could be well wide of the mark on this.

Was going to go with Augusta, never looks less than fabulous on TV. Just wonder if without all the Masters hulabaloo it might not be quite the same.

Otherwise, Royal County Down. Get the feeling it would be very special whatever the conditions.

Cape Kidnappers for me;

Cypress Point. Pine Valley a close second.

A bit of feedback for other's choices:

Royal County Down is the best course I have played to date. Spectacular, challenging and fair.

Loch Lomond was a major disappointment. The setting is magnificent but the course is far from memorable.

For those saying Troon, Carnoustie etc - just go and play them!

Augusta - I know several people who have bought rounds there in charity auctions so not that difficult to get a game on if you have the shekels. Cypress Point and Pine Valley are a different matter altogether though. Not easy to get a game.

Doing 17mile drive many moons ago I spotted the entrance to Cypress Point and demanded of my girlfriend (now Mrs SILH) that we go up the drive (having already done the compulsory stop at Pebble Beach with photo under tree by 18th green - $100 for the round it was - and there was a slot). And we did - and parked outside the beautiful colonial mansion clubhouse. I popped into the cabin that was the pro-shop and had a wee chat with the Assistant. A member overheard and gave me the 'aw gee your fae Scatland bit' which was really nice. I tried my best friendly Scot bit with the hope of... but no chance. I did get given a scorecard, ball marker and a couple of other bits though. Looked just awesome.

Excellent list! I'm fortunate enough to have played all of them. RCD and Pinehurst in particular are stunning.

Wow, many congratulations for that achievement!!! Just a little envious

Agree that RCD and Pinehurst look breathtaking - I sincerely hope I could concentrate walking round.

We're thinking about a family trip to Scotland in the next year or two so I'll aim to tick off a few then if I brush up on my negotiation skills!
