What club to take?

Would never take this on. OK, not strictly true and may be tempted in a roll up or out on my own for a practice round but its a full five wood, out of the meat and its still in the lap of the gods

Lay up for me. I play my driver with confidence 200 yard average carry in mind. I know I can hit it further than that but comfortable with 200. Of the deck I wouldn't be happy with anything greater than a 160 carry and that would need a good lie. Not really looking forward to playing the 15th on Friday at Conrawood.

To add to the debate, to make this shot you have to hit the ball as sweetly as you can, anything slightly off centre and the ball's wer.
How many times would you cream the ball from the sweetspot when faced with a shot like this..?

This for me.... I can carry my 3 wood about 205 mtrs off a tee...... with a 220 yard carry over water for a 2nd shot i wouldnt even contemplate the shot.....I would have to catch it straight out of the screws and with a fade to make it even hold the green from that distance.......For me its too high a percentage shot to take on......Id be hitting a mid iron ito wedge distance and at worst would hope to only drop the one shot with an outside chance at par......Its better than going swimming and destroying a card.....

What if you only have 50yds to the waters edge then 170 carry over a pond, would you still punt it forward with a wedge?

170 Yard carry over water with a mid iron is a lot safer than 220 with timber brendy..... Plus if there was a 50 yard strip to the waters edge then you'd want to be thinking very carefully about what your hitting off the tee to leave you a 220 yard carry......

The OP hasnt said whether its a par 3,4 or 5...Just that he's got a 220 yard carry..... There has to be land on at least 1 side of the lake that he can play to.
Is this a fictional hole or one at the OP's course?.... Id be interested to see what the hole looks like.

It certainly reminds me of the 18th at hilton twmplepatrick. 500 yard par 5 with a hefty carry over water to reach the green in two OR chicken out and play well to the right of the lake where a bailout fairway resides. I couldnt tell you what it is like to play off that bit of turf haha.
From the waters edge, this is what you can see ..

I think there's a famous hole at Cypress Point. Par 3 with a 220yd carry over the Pacific, or a fairway that runs around the cliff which needs a mid iron to reach.

Depends on the score looking at that.... If i have a good score going but not hitting the ball particularly well then its a bail out...... If im swinging well then with the amount of grass at the opposite side of that lake then id go for it in a heartbeat and rely on the short game....
From 220 yards though to hit a green say 30 yards long and 10 yards wide is a tall order.... So i wouldnt be expecting to hit it.

Mid iron to the fairway.....Wedge in to 3 ft....Tap in Par walk away with a grin to the next tee while my partners are putting X's on there cards......

But in Fairness Region..... Once in a lifetime chance....Id have to fade my 3 wood off the tee ;)

It depends on other factors, wind, lie, par 5 or par 4 etc etc.
But id hit 4 iron, 5 if the wind is helping.

Thats one heck of a tee shot needed there, If I nail my 3 wood then I can only carry 190-200, so would either pop on a dress and play off the lady's tee, or pretend my tennis elbow was playing up and sit it out.

The hole is fictional.
Im loving the reality holes though.
I was just wandering if anyone knew there carry distances for their rescues and woods.
Or wether a long shot was just pot luck on distance.
Maybe its something we take for granted, and pick a club we think might get there,as apposed
to pickng a club that will carry 220 or as near as possible.
Or picking a club that will easily carry and except the result.
We wouldn't do it with an short iron.

To answer the original question, all other things being equal I'd hit 4 wood as I 'think' my carry distance with it is around 225yds on a well struck shot (which obviously isn't guaranteed!).
I can eek a bit more out of it if needed (but lessens the chances of a good hit). A few weeks ago at Beau Desert I used it on the tee of the 260yd 9th, and pitched in the bank 5-10yds short of the green so probably carried around 235-240.
