I always find it interesting to read peoples distances on threads, and im
not surprised in these hard ground conditions there are some massive distances
banded around.
But my question is this.
Lets say a second shot is over water, the green is firm but will take a high ball, but not a flat
ball.
The pin is 6 yards on with 10 yards behind.
The shot is 220 to carry the water.
What club would you use.
Does anyone really know there exact distance of carry with each club, because that surely
is the crux of it.
I really do know my carry distances for my wedges and irons.
But when I get to my rescues and woods, there are so many variables.
So is it a matter of making sure it gets over and excepting the outcome,or do
you really know your carry distances with longer clubs.
As im writing this im really thinking I should get to a range or field and find out
my carry distances for woods and rescues.

I'd have to lay up.
I can't carry 220 and stop the ball within 10 yards more than about 1 in 20 attempts...
Hitting a 220 carry accurately isn't easy

Agreed. Pin position would irrelevant for me,I'd go with the biggest part of the green.

I think with a 20 degree hybrid I could stop the ball on the green 1 in 10 and splash 9. With a 3 wood I would clear the water 9 /10 but would never hold the green.

Bunch of cowards laying up :D

I'd take 4 wood.

Doubt I would get the carry as that would be right on my limit (... maybe a little past).

Having said that. We have a par 3 at our place the is 195, and my 2H pitches on there, so maybe it is in range.

On a different note, I try not to leave myself that shot :D

If I hit a worldly and flew the green I'd only have a short chip/pitch left

id have to hit a high 15 degree hybrid. it would most likely pitch into the bank at the front of the green, take a high bounce and release nicely up towards the pin.

back in reality I would be walking to the DZ ! :o

This is really what im trying to get at.
If I knew exactly how far I could hit my rescues and woods on the fly,it would stop
on the green.
A ball dying as its reached its optimum distance will stop.

Wind and lie would come into it. all things being normal Id be "trying" either a high 3i or very high 5w. Hang on, did you say stroke or stableford? do I get a shot? :D

Is there an echo in here? :D

No, its stupid intermittent 3g and wifi in the depths of foggy Cornwall......

To add to the debate, to make this shot you have to hit the ball as sweetly as you can, anything slightly off centre and the ball's wer.
How many times would you cream the ball from the sweetspot when faced with a shot like this..?

the problem with this question is that whilst I can judge my carries, the lie will have an impact on the anticipated relationship between carry and roll, as will so many other things, as Brendy points out. With a requirement for 224/2 (+7-3) I really can't see any mileage in taking it on to make 4 relative to laying up to around 80 yds and then putting the wedge in the water....:(

5 wood, sand wedge, one putt!

Even without the water in front I'd struggle to reach; sunday best 3 wood with a decent hard bounce might run up.... but would be more luck than judgement!

Not even a chance I would go for it. If I got it across it wouldn't have stopped on the green so its either 2 more shots around the green or a lay up and 2 or 3 shots from the lay up position. Its not worth the risk unless its a bounce game.
