what balls to play ??

I am not convinced with lake balls. I think the degradation is caused by the processing, rather than the immersion time. In order to get them white, they effectively have to boil them in nasty stuff, which can't do them any favours at all.

And don't get me started on refurbished golf balls. They really are pish.

Refurbished balls are great, the only time you can hit a slice and a hook in the same shot is with one of these, gotta love the marbled egg effect they soon develop too. :D

Don't know about lake balls and how they perform as I've never used them. I don't know enough about their construction to know whether they become "waterlogged"??

Blimey Murph, you make them sound like an old pair of socks. :D I'm not sure they have to boil them in nasty stuff nowadays (the old trico tanks). With ultrasonic cleaning tanks and the mild chemicals used, I can't see it eating into a urethane cover.

As I mentioned before, I'm not at a standard for it to make a great deal of difference to my game game anyway.

They might not have to, but I bet they still do. The yield of good ones must be far higher. having pulled numerous balls out of lakes in Fl, balls are really hard to get 'as new' unless they have only been in there a very short time.

We had a massive trike tank at my last place. Awesome stuff for clearing your sinuses (and cylinder heads, when I was refuring an MG). Pity the stuff got banned.

If you're not of a standard that lake balls will make any difference to your game, then why are you buying ProVs at all?

If the type of ball you're playing makes no difference, just buy the cheapest.

I find it hard to believe that people don't find a difference from the ball that is being played - I play with several types of Bridgestone ball in comps - but during the week I play with whatever muck is in the locker.

Last week I played 2 balls one was a Dunlop DDH (well used) and a proV1 (scuffed to bits and well used)
DDH These balls flew well in the air and had very little spin - so when I sliced one it stayed in the rough- the proV was on the next fairway.
When hitting the wedges in the DDH bounced at the front and rolled to the back of the green or off it - with a ProV it stayed on the back 1/3rd.
With the small chips the DDH rolled and rolled where the ProV needed to be hit harder to get the same distance.
DDH putting was not a nice experience - the proV1 was just lovely off the putter face and needed quite a bit less to go the same distance.

I simply don't believe that you can just play with any muck and get your best scores - I believe you need to find a ball that suits your game and play with it.

In the case of a total beginner this may be the cheapest lucky bag balls - which don't excel in any area except cost.
For a decent player that gets lots of driver side spin it may be the ProV1x as it spins less in the air than other premium balls- or it should be an NXT Extreme for the person looking distance and a bit of feel.

Can you point me in the direction of where I said I buy ProV's.

The only ProV's I play have either been found, given to me or won. Never bought.

I find a difference between types of balls, but playing lake balls like for like against new...then no, I can't tell the difference.
