Had a day off work today and used my time wisely by going for a round.

1st tee saw a nice drive finishing right of the fairway, nicely placed for my approach shot.

I digress!

Imagine my surprise, nay horror when I stepped towards the the par 3 2nd, only to find........a winter tee!!!

We've had some bad weather recently but I was amazed that it warranted the winter tees on the par 3's.
My course is notoriously bad draining, conditions were not ideal today with many lies extremely wet to say the least.

Approaching the end of the front 9 I was shocked to find we were also on a winter green on the 8th!!!

To cap the front 9 off. We took our chosen clubs from our bags and stepped up to the 9th tee when.........snow began to fall. Only around 1 minutes worth but it served notice of what we may come to expect this winter.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my round and played some good golf, but I do worry about the remaining golf playable this year, due to the weather and lack of daylight hours. I can't see myself getting on the course after work now the clocks have gone back. Just hope the weekend weather stays reasonable.

Anyone else seeing the effects of winter on their courses? ie, winter tees or greens?

The temporary greens are prepared, and we will swap to a 'winter' card on Sunday. This shortens the course, by playing off forward tees, and all the par 5s become long par 4s. We have had a fair bit of frost recently, and it wouldn't surprise me if we are on the temps sooner rather than later.

Must set my gps for the temps so at least I will know the yardage.

We've got a few winter mats already.
Seems a sensible idea since todays weather was terrible.
I had to drive back from Birmingham in snow/sleet and non-stop too. Awful.
Since when does it snow in October?
As I was given my h'cap off winter mats (at least my best round was) I look forward to playing to it over the coming months.
Flippin' mud.....it drives me nuts.

Mud, yeah, nasty stuff. Hit a wedge off it on Saturday, just had to wash the mud off my hat, jacket and trousers and I was fine.

Course is still playing OK, greens got a load of sand on them and thats it.

And dont get me started on mud, its driving me nuts!

We tend to stick the green on temporary's during the week and put them back on the main greens for weekends. I don't think we have a single temporary tee on the course. The back nine in particular does get pretty muddy and wet and we aren't immune to be being closed for being too wet but by and large we get by pretty well

Mud thats why you dont buy a white Galvin Green jacket it looked good out the box, played at the weekend it was not waterproofs i needed it was a canoe,
I dont mind temp tees on par 3s and as my club the temp greens are roped off all year and cut regular they are fantastic but flatish to play on,its just nice to get out there

I'm happy to say that we play off the regular tees and greens all the year round. The white tees are rested and the yellows are used all winter. Our second hole, par 4, is turned into a par 3 by putting the tee forward, but that is only to protect the area from where the second shot is most frequently played. Too many divots there.

My course was closed the last three days and before that we were on winter greens, tees and lift and replace ure ball on a mat if on a fairway. The drainage is awful at our club and it drives me mad.

AdamK15, how does a 29 h/cap work. They are capped at 28, surely?

I have a white fJ red label w/proof jacket, and it is that which has just been cleaned (yet again). Not the most practical colour, and it makes me look like a dentist.

We will probably be on the winter tee boxes when I go and play tomorrow - we were on winter rules at the weekend. We normally get away without winter greens but they have started preping them just in case.

Its snowing in Aylesbury at the moment but its not going to settle - been lashing down with rain for the last 3 hours or more.

Could be a squidgy round tomorrow.

All our juniors are off plus one

That'll explain it then. Most of our juniors are off 32 or so (the small kids) they just think they are off +1 :)

We have one immodest kid off 13 who reckons on a good day he'll beat any of the adult members in Matchplay. He's a good player and talented for sure, but the current score is RGuk 3 - big-headed brat 0.

Winter Tee's at every Par 3 on the course I played Saturday what annoys me about them more than anything is all the stones on them from the path's.

More terrified of taking chunks out of the sole of my clubs than actually hitting balls.

The mud is horrible too especially at the exits from holes you have to pick a very delicate path sometimes.

Still beats sitting in the house all day avoiding DIY

Thankfully we avoid winter tees and temp greens but were playing winter rules from now till probable end of march depending on the weather.

foretheday, thanks for the reminder. I promised myself last winter that I'd put a small stiff brush in the bag for just this.

hate our winter tees. artifical mat of the texture of a green scouring pad confined in a concrete or wood frame. usually too small, uneven and the tee-slots last about 5 minutes.

do any of you play winter rules for greens? I saw a notice the other day which said (I think) that you don't need to remove the pin if there is frost/casual water on the green; and on winter tees you don't need to putt out if within one (normal) putter length (pick up 1 stroke) excepting if the hole is oversized.
