3 birdies in opening 6 holes of an open at East Berkshire GC yesterday looking good when suddenly disaster struck.

As we were approaching the green my FC walked ahead and was standing next to his ball so I walked over to the ball sitting 10 yards behind.

I chipped on and went to mark the ball when I noticed it wasn't my ball. Argh!!! 2 shot pen and a triple bogey from nowhere. It started a bad run but managed to get my head together towards the end of the round.

Still finshed a respectable 6th (net 72) in the morning but was kicking myself.

Only have myself to blame but was thrown because FC went up to his ball and was picking his club to play it. Harsh reminder to check your ball and never assume anything.

BTW what a lovely course East Berkshire is, definitely one for me to join further down the road.

Tell me about it. 18 hole medal and after 8 holes I was four under hcap, I then went 3 X double bogey, triple bogey, bogey, triple bogey double bogey, par, triple bogey par.

Ps mods might want to move this into the lounge 👍

Back in my RAF days, I played against an army chap.
We both missed a green left, one front and one back.
Army bod got to the green first, checked the first ball and walked on to the ball at the back of the green. I assumed the front ball was mine and chipped on. As you guessed, as I marked it I saw it was his ball.
Lost hole but never again

This is one of the reasons I like playing with a yellow ball. Nobody playing a white ball will mistake mine for theirs and vise versa.

A mate of mine mistook balls when both he and an opponent in a BB match went in the same bunker.

He didn't hit it though. He had a senior moment and forgot he couldn't move the big leaf that was half lying over the ball.

Got himself a penalty and helped his opponent out at the same time.

How was the course Sean? Played that event a few times and it is always in good nick, forgot all about it this year

I love pillock moments! Had one at Enville just the other week.

Flighted shank off the tee on a par 3. Tried miracle shot thru 70000 trees and, as always happens, hit the very last one a Rick O Shead off into the heather. Playing partner had line and headed straight to "it".

Buried deep in the heather, so hacked it forward. Got to where it was and realised not my ball! Pillock!!

The question my pp asked then was, "is this the one you hit after the original tee shot?"... Aargh, I didn't know :(

Luckily my ball was literally a foot away from where I hit the wrong one from. Almost got to the stage where I stood after holing out pointing back down the hole to each shot, 1,2,2shot penalty 5.................PILLOCK:)

Thank God there isn't much heather at St Enodoc or we'd be out there for 6 hours each round tomorrow with all your #drive4showputt4doughpointing

Ssssh. I'll have to start my pre shot routine and visualisation again if you start making noise behind me!

It was the Wilson/Lushington bowl Gordon.

It was the first time I played there so can't compare the condition to previous years but it was fantastic. They had the Pro/am there the day before so that would've helped.

Definitely going in again next year. I wast expecting great things form-wise as I have played little golf in past year but got off to a blinder and played to handicap 1st round.

I bumped into James (jimbob someroo? ) up there, he had a great second round so was me in reverse.( my pm round was rubbish).

Couldn't the leaf be lifted (and replaced) for the purposes of identifying the correct ball to be played without penalty?

Glad you enjoyed it. East Berks is one of my favourite courses. It's the first course I ever hit a ball on. My dad grew up on the course either side of WW1 and was very friendly with the then pro who made him some cut down clubs, so inevitably when dad got me interested in the game he took me there.

I think it has got some cracking holes, (3rd, 7th, 10th, 13th 14th, and 17th) which are a test for the very best mixed in with plenty of holes where any player can have a chance to get something back.

For the purposes of identifying his ball I guess it could, but it wasn't the leafs fault that he thought it was his. He just walked to the one he thought it was and picked it up without thinking just because it was in his way.

Off the top of my head I'm not sure but as you can't play a wrong ball out of a hazard you are Ok to play as it lies then identify it afterwards??

A lovely course and a timely reminder to be ultra careful to always ensure you're playing the right ball. Sometimes very hard. I played in a four ball last week and three out of the four had titleist balls and all had a black dot or dots as their identifying mark. As you can imagine the first couple of holes were farcical to watch as there was constant discussion about which ball was which. I stood smugly with my Srixon (and then Callaway when I lost that). Fortunately common sense prevailed and they each got a ball with more identifiable markings and we could crack on.
