Westwood?

I was disappointed for him, in an interview afterwards he said that he just could not play into the wind it felt like he did not know what to do.
We have all been there to some extent where you have it one day and the next it's gone. Just so happens it was in the final round at The Open.
He was fairly philosophical about it though and went on to say the is taking some positives away with him. I think that he has made the right decision going to the USA and to change his coach as there has been a big improvement in his putting and short game.
I would not right him off so soon.

I cant see him winning one and he wont get a better chance than this...with the increased numbers of top talent coming through and contending each weak I can only see him dropping awayQUOTE]

So are you saying Westwood doesn't have the game to compete anymore?
He hits it a mile, is one of the best ball strikers out there and is working hard on improving his short game.
He has also just joined forces with Sean Foley who has taken Tiger back to world number on

I think it is a bit premature to write someone with Lee Westwood's ability off...[/Q

yes I am and have said that... he doest have the complete game in place to win a major both mentally and short game wise. Far to much talent and competition building up around him adds to his problems....

Gutted - absolutely gutted. I didn't even manage a smile when I saw the obvious wind up thread but some people on here must have been getting a bit twitchy after round 3 as they have been righting him off for years and he keeps comming back.

Short game was as good as anyone all week apart from Big Phil on the last round.

However:

Mcilroy - lost from the front at the Masters couple of years back - won the next major.
Scott - lost from the front at last years Open - won the next major.
Mickleson - came 2nd (again) at the US Open - won the next major.
Westwood - lost from the front this week ........ hope history does indeed repeat itself!! Roll on the USPGA in August!

To be fair to him his putting and short game actually saved his round, as his last round swing appeared again where he's all over the shop, would have been good to get the monkey of his back , but a decent 2 weeks for Mickeleson with nearly £1.5 million in the bag after winning at Castle Stuart as well.

I don't agree with Westwood not being agressive enough on Sunday... he went for quite a few pins and just couldn't roll in the put from 10 to 15 feet.. not necessarily an error, not many go in from that distance...he maybe was a bit tentative on a couple but as we saw, you can't mess around on these greens. Had his chances but a few sloppy drives and irons gave it away and juts didn't have the birdies there.

As for his future chances... he's still fit, he's obviously still got a passion for it given he's trying everything to win a major and he's there or there abouts in most majors (he competes well in all 4). Think he's got 16 more majors where he still has the game to compete.

in summary for me - Moved to US and already improved his short game (I believe he has been working with Greg Norman)
brought in Ian Baker Finch for Putting and putted extremely well
changed coach to Sean Foley...

He isnt finished and seems to have realised the weaknesses he needs to improve and the effort required. He was found out a little in the last round but still a solid week for me.

Can't believe that anyone thought I was on the wind up.

I spent the day at a BBQ drinking heavily and saw next to nothing of the Open hence the post.

I see he's 25's for the USPGA......could be a decent E/W punt.

Interesting to read one or two saying he deserves a major... I don't think he deserves any more than he's already won. Simple as that.
Westwood is a fine golfer but with only four chances a year and many players capable of winning one.. I can't see him getting many more chances.

3 cheers for lefty and bones:cheers:

Think he deserves credit for getting into the lead. Played steady for six holes and then a few poor shots along with some shocking lies in bunkers was a killer. Definitely don't think the bottle or the putter/short game went astray. Bad shoots at bad times. Everyone except Mickleson who lets face it shot the lowest round of the day, did it

Well... you gotta admit he is looking more porky than what he was the other month.... maybe Westy and the gym have fallen out again :( I know how he feels though.... tried for months with a full on core body training thing and it did bugger all for my distance or game!! Dont get me wrong I keep myself fit and supple but all this over training and working out with huge weights doesn't suit everyone in my opinion. Keep trim and stay healthy yes but thrashing yourself within an inch of your life sometimes works the other way!

It didnt work for Monty either though those man boobs are getting a tadge heavy!! :o and sometimes loosing loads of weight just messes with your natural swing!!! So there's hope for us salad dodgers out there :whoo:
