Westwood?

So Phil gets nearly a million and Westwood a gnats hair off half a million, they won't won't give hoot about the money, they are both multi millionaires anyway, perhaps if it was their first tournament and the cash was needed to live and secure a future, but westwood will be well cheesed off that he couldn't hold it together again in the final round.

I think it was his long irons that let him down. Also seemed to try and play it too safe instead of being a little more aggressive.

I bet Dunlop are delighted he didnt win!! :o With him and Clarke winning in the space of 3 years the price of their crap golf shirts would have had to go from £1 to £2 to cover it off!!!

I hate to say this as I'm a big fan.... but I reckon that's going to melt him mentally and we wont see much of him from now on..... fade away into insignificance and doing crap Sky PGA tour golf shows with that dull Andrew Coltart is my thought....:(

Your point on the Dunlop shirts is valid as I hate the things as well. However if you think Westwood will vanish have to strongly disagree

Why?

He's had chances as good as that before and not won, and always bounced back....

Bizarrely the long game was what cost him all week. He was excellent on and around the greens for 3 days. Missed a few putts yesterday but he got into bad situations off the tee/from the fairway far too often and that was the problem.

I hope your right I really do but I think the guy's had quite few hard blows now and it must be taking its toll... :( its not about the money for these chaps it about the majors.... I cant see him winning one and he wont get a better chance than this...with the increased numbers of top talent coming through and contending each weak I can only see him dropping away.... sorry but it shows the strength of the man to be at the top for as long as he has been so far but....

I don't think he will win a major either never have done and seen nothing to convince me otherwise, however he will have a few more years competing at the top level yet before he drops down the rankings

Competing or winning?? Being a former world number 1 you gotta be winning.... its only ever going to be about the Majors for these guys the "taking part" thing is so lame an excuse for these chaps I'm afraid. He's got the long game there is no doubt one of the best ball strikers in the world but he putts and chips like a donkey normally and mentally he must now be mush! :(

Westwood is obviously a great player, and he deserves to win a major, but I think he is going to end up finishing his career without one. There are only the 4 of them, and more players who can or deserve to win one than there are majors available.

Is Westwood a more accomplished player than Ben Curtis, Shaun Micheel, Rich Beem, Todd Hamilton, Mike Weir, Trevor Immelmann, etc etc?

Of course, but I don't think he will be joining that club.

To coin a well (over) used phrase If he keeps knocking on the door hopefully one day he'll fall through it! Obviously the chances will get fewer and fewer, and harder to come by as time ticks on!

Agree with all of those apart from Immelman who I thought was a real class act until he developed a serious wrist injury which has basically screwed him up. Cannot see Westwood ever winning a major and he will never get a better chance than yesterday

Westwood needs to take the positives from the week. He played well for three days and chipped and putted much better than usual.

With hindsight, he went too defensive on Sunday and, whether it was nerves or whatever, his long game just wasn't firing. So many irons off the tee finding the crap. Then when he was pegged back to a share of the lead his putting reverted to type - not getting to the hole.

I don't want to say he'll never win a major but it's looking more and more like it. I always thought Monty would get over the line one day and he never did....

I seem to remember a lot of people saying Mickelson would never win a major, and now he's only one away from the set!

Will Westwood win one? I don't know. My gut says no, but then stranger things have happened. If he can put both his long and short game together now, then he's got as good a chance as any of the other top players, and maybe more, given he's come runner up or top three in quite a few now. I really hope he does win one.

Don't forget that he's been working on his short game so much, that maybe, just maybe, he's like the rest of us... I know when I work on one thing for any length of time, some other part of my game goes really wrong!

I agree with this. The earlier comment is a tad ridiculous.
Westwood came back from a career low of 269 in the world (I think that was his lowest rank) and climbed all the way to number 1 in the world, having won the race to Dubai, multiple tournaments and played in all ryder cups since.
I can't see how the disappointment of this week will make him crack now.

I also don't think he bottled it - he played really well except for a couple of leaked tee shots and a couple of unfortunate shots into the bunkers. Phil won the Open, Westwood didn't throw it away.

So are you saying Westwood doesn't have the game to compete anymore?
He hits it a mile, is one of the best ball strikers out there and is working hard on improving his short game.
He has also just joined forces with Sean Foley who has taken Tiger back to world number one.
I think it is a bit premature to write someone with Lee Westwood's ability off...

Interesting to read people writing off Lee's chances at 40. Phil is now 43 and showing no signs of losing his touch.

Agreed. I find it fascinating that people are so quick to say 'he won't do this' or 'he can't do that'.
Westwood is definitely good enough to win a Major but the issue is there are 30/40 other names that you can inculde in the list of players that are good enough to win a Major.

He has finished in the top-10 16 times in Majors.
2008 US open finished one stroke off a play off with Woods and Mediate
2009 Open finished one stroke off a play off with T Watson and S Cink
2010 Masters Mickelson played some of the best golf to win by 3 shots, but no one could compete against Phil that Sunday

I am sure if we looked hard enough it isn't a case of Lee 'bottling it' but a case of someone else playing incredibly golf to win it.

did Tiger, Adam Scott and Hunter Mahan bottle it yesterday?

Why don't you tell us what you really think...

Ok - :) I hope it proves me wrong as I said, I do like the guy personally..... but he doesn't get my bet any more and in fact fact not even an each way...:( Its the look in the eyes for me.... he's gone, smoked, slammed, out of here..... As before a lesser man would have fallen off the radar a long time ago.... Nothing to do with age... 40 is nothing nowadays if you keep fit. Yes Mickelson is winning well in his 40's and a nice guy to boot but hey Phil won his first major years ago... I think Lee deep down realises this was his best chance and he blew it.....
