I missed the whole final round so was it a case of Lee's ass dropping out yet again due to his rightly berated short game , much by the Scottish knowledgable bretheran, or just plain bad luck?

Started well enough, good first 6 holes. Didn't look nervous all day but hit a few stray ones and got punished.

His putting was very good all week I thought. Short game was looking pretty solid too.

I think he made the mistake of playing Mahan, Scott and Woods instead of the whole field, so he was looking in ok shape then Big Phil went on his run. Left himself too much to do late on.

Though to be fair, as it turned out he'd have needed to shoot 70 to win, something many other big names failed to do. I doubt many players would have been able to contend with Phil's 66. Sometimes you just come up against a performance you can do nothing about.

Did he miss by a shot then? Was it close? Do I need to look up the BBC website? Surely he came close with his new found short game skills?

+4 for the day, finished +1. Mickleson finished -3.

Westwood only had 1 birdie. The problems started on the par 3 7th when he put his tee shot in the left bunker. Needed two to get out and did well to just get a bogey. Had to get up and down too many times in the end and let a few shots leak.

In Summary

* Phil Mickelson wins the Open on -3
* American shoots 66 to win by three
* Henrik Stenson runner-up on level par
* Poulter, Scott, Westwood third on +1
* Woods, Matsuyama, Johnson +2

75 closing round?

Definate jinker drop again then. He has to be getting a complex now.Bottling it seems easy for Lee.Good final round from Phil but are my maths right to say an under par round would have got Lee home today?

Your maths are spot on!

The only way Westwood will win a major, will be to get a pretty much untouchable lead in the first 3 rounds, so when his bottle goes in the last round and the others are playing catch up he has suficient in the bank to scrape the win.

I think he deserves credit for being there.
After all, many many big names failed to make the cut and many more were also-rans, a long way down in the pack.
OK he didn't play well in the last round but, as Bob said, he played junk and still came third.
His performance over the first 3 days, especially his short game, shows that moving to USA is beginning to show signs of benefit.
