Me and some mates were at the Open and although we never had any burgers we were quite shocked when it turned out that 5 pints in the pub after the golf cost less than the 4 tubs of ice cream we had earlier in the day.

Ever wondered just how much these Concessions pay for their pitch at an event like the Open ?

Anyway, being a canny scot, I've always got a good supply of all that I'm likely to need to eat or drink in the rucsack along with the waterproofs and binoculars.

It's enough to get in to an event nowadays without forking out more inside. ;)

A lot, I guess.

I hate paying over the odds for food. It used to annoy me (to an occasional incandescent state) how much food/drinks are just off the motorway (services). Now that M&S and Waitrose etc. are all over the motorway services network, I'm as happy a hippo in mud. I actually WANT to stop now....

You should come to my hospital. We are only one of a handful of hospitals to have an on site M&S or similar. Happy days if you want snacks, sandwiches etc but a killer if you are a dibetic like me. Much cheaper than the other food outlets around the trust though and always packed so I guess they must be raking it in over and above whatever they pay to be there

No joke, it's inside the entrance of the main building.
It's even listed on the BK website.

up here in ayrshire our hospitals have chip shops and victoria wines!!! :D :D

but that's just because it would be too much of a shock to the system otherwise. They aren't geared up for that much de-tox.

Not sure who does Hinchinbrooke but sausage rolls and pasty substitutes are a regular feature. It is interesting that you can buy so much 'bad'/'unhealthy' food in hospitals; I don't think McD or BK figure very high on the Good Food Guide.

I come accross these companies in my working life that provide the catering for these events, in fact I had a meeting with the one that catered for the Open only yesterday. They tend to have large overheads with staff (as they have to take on temporary local people) and place a team in the area weeks before the events to set-up.

These companies do everything from high end hospitality to the burger van so need a wide range of support facilities and back-up. Invariably, these need to be leased and bought in on a temporary basis, increasing on-costs.

Also, and this is a symptom of the current economic climate, commissions and profit margins are being squeezed and, obviously, this has a knock-on affect of selling prices to the captive market. In the end, there are enough people who will not plan ahead and purchase food at the venue, and unfortunately they will have to pay the going rate.

As an aside, they were saying that they have to double the staff in the mobile units when Tiger is approaching as they suddenly get inundated by the following pack.....no packed lunches there!

By the way, I am not defending the prices, just giving a few reasons why prices are as they are!

£6.50 for a scabby burger, sod that! I'd take packing up, a few roast chicken sarnies with mayo, a few packets of crisps and a few tins. I will not pay over the odds for crap.

Saviour on a bike! I am really looking forward to Dubai and that unpronouncable place in Columbo now.
I heard Disneyland in Paris was tantamount to being mugged.
