Ok so I've read the threads on wedges and I want to confirm my understanding.

I have the following:-

PW - 44deg loft 11deg bounce
LW - 60deg loft 11deg bounce

Now all this year I felt I've not had a good mid wedge, and when checking the loft on the pitch wedge I have started to understand why.

So I'm thinking along the kiss principle and buying a 54deg 8 deg bounce wedge (a titliest vokey actual oil can spec, mainly cos I love the whole gun metal thing).

But is this sensible should I chuck the 60 away and get a 50 or 52 and a 58 instead?

I really only want to learn one or two clubs well (opening the blade up etc) I don't really subscribe to the 4 wedge set up.

My 60 is good for bunkers, but gets no real distance (obviously) and needs to be struck hard (which means the risk of thinning it increases) I'm thinking that a nice 54 softly struck around the green side will be easier to control that the pw in the same situation (plus with the lower bounce means i can open up the blade more and hopefully not as likly to thin it) but keen for some advice..

Ps I'm a 28 handicap, but have been playing on and off for a few years this year if started to get more serious.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers
Andy

Bench the 60
Get a 50 and a 56. Although really your PW is a 9 iron and every other iron is one number lower!
I appreciate you don't want 4 wedges so this will at least give you an even spread between clubs.
To my mind the ideal would be getting a 48, 52, 56 and 60 but that's been debated on here too many times already.

What bounce depends on your course and how you hit the ball.
Softer course = more bounce (generally)
Firmer course = less.

Small or no divot = low bounce
Medium/Large divot = higher bounce.

I find it best to have a mixture of bounces so I'd get a medium/low bounce 50 - say 6-8 degrees and then a 56 with 10+ for bunkers.

Worth getting a Pro to check you out too. They'll be better placed to make a judgement.

Cheers for your comments.

I've found out all the lofts for the diablo range are a bit juiced up, not complaining it just mean's I'm not embarrassed when I hit my 7 iron 150yds, I know deep down its a 6, but that's not what's stamped on the club! Also somewhat explains why I blasted my 9 iron to about 140 Yds on Wednesday (I struck it well on that occasion) roasting the ball straight through a 120 yd par 3 onto the tee box behind the hole!!

So obviously you think no to the 54 deg.

So i guess a 6 deg spread between clubs is really what your advocating. I agree with regards to bounce.

Would you tune shafts for a wedge, I didn't bother with my irons and they seem good for me, figuring that a std set up would be fine, I'm 6ft, with no scary fast or exceptionally slow swing speed.

I'd agree with the pro advice, but they are buggering off now to warmer climates now as the golf season here is finished (first snow fall started today). So I may have to sort this one out myself!

Cheers
Andy

If your irons are standard then follow suit with the wedges - won't make a huge difference.

No to the 54 because your PW is 44 degrees. You don't want huge gaps in lofts. Unless you want to go 44, 54, 64....:D:p

I have gone 45 (pw), 52 and a 56 deg, will see how it goes and if I miss the extra lofted club (used a 60 degree previously) I will swap the 56 for a 58

let us know how it goes

Yeah I've sat down and organised what I have / want.

PW - 44 deg 11deg bounce - got
GW - 50 deg 8deg bounce - thinking titliest oil can wedge......tried one and liked the look, feel.
SW - 56 deg 11deg bounce - same as above.

Will ditch the 60 deg wedge and look to replace after Xmas with an 18 deg hybrid maybe.

Incidentally I happened to see a ping G15 13deg driver, I'm itching to try that, that may help remove my driver slice but imparting less side spin. Maybe a thread for another day......

Cheers for listening.

loft is your friend with drivers by all accounts

can you not get a matching gw/sw same as your irons? would maybe work out better weight/feel wise with the pw

I could, but they are heavy duty game improvement clubs, and because of that the soles are really wide, I much prefer a smaller sole wedge as I do like to open the club up to pitch out of deep rough etc. I used to do ths with my 60deg also.

No I'm pretty happy using a different style of club for my wedges, I hope it's not something I'll change for 5 years or more.

Yeah I'm itching to try that ping, it looked super inspiring looking down at it from address, like how can I possibly slice ths it's good a huge loft!!!

Cheers

I find that a lot of wedges, sand wedges in particular that come with sets look and feel rubbish and I prefer to get a specialist club for the job. In relation to the OP I think the new set up you are thinking about sounds pretty good and its about getting the right bounce for your conditions. I'm not a fan of LW's and do feel that for a lot of golfers the ratio of shots saved/squandered is 50/50 at best and don't see that as value. It been debated before and just my opinion. I use TM wedges because I wanted the feel etc to be similar to what I already use and found some wedges (Cally and Vokey) too heavy for my liking.

Normally you would have them set @ 4 deg differences & all set off your most lofted club, go see your pro & get it sorted......

I have the same issue with a 44 degree PW, had that in my old irons and my new ones. My old wedge set up was to have a 50, 54 and 60. am looking to change that now and think that a 48, 52 and 56 should cover my gaps better. My favourite wedge has been my old Orka FK2 but they have been discontinued. I emailed the MD and he has a few sets he kept for posterity so is looking into having one made up to my specs. If that cannot be done i will give the matching CG16 wedges a go as Cleveland do a good selection of loft and bounce options.

If it were possible I would, but golf has closed down here for winter. Everyone s playing hockey now!!!! I was hoping a pro was going to open an indoor practice facility but unfortunately that hasn't happened.

Sounds good, I'm having real bother finding a 50.08 vokey oil can, looks like its rocking horse sh*te......

May have to rethink the setup or go with a different brand, ideally I want both wedges the same brand / model.

You could always get a 52 degree with 10 degrees on bounce and have it delofted to 50 degrees, this would also lessen the bounce to 8 degrees. I am sure s hop would carry out this adjustment for you.

Just a bit curious as to why your 9-hole course is non-affiliated.

Great idea, however, after much searching I have found golf town.ca have the wedges im looking for.

Incidentally the titliest SM4 wedges are due out here in north America in the net two to three weeks...

Tbh I don't know, it's just run as a sort of society which keeps it nice and simple; it's ridiculously cheap and suits me down to the ground. We do have society days out too. I don't know if it saves on fees or work or what.
