Wedge Advice

Hi all

I'm a newcomer to the game but can already see how incredibly important the short game is.

The set of irons I have are a 43deg PW and 55deg SW which to me doesn't particularly seem to offer too much versatility around the green.

If you were me - and assuming cost wasn't a factor - would you replace the two 'kit' wedges with 3-4 wedges covering say 50-60 deg range or would you keep both and add something in between the two? Just on what would be best for your game rather than any cost implication?

I guess a gap wedge of around 50 deg would help, then get a short game lesson and learn how to use them properly.

Personal choice some like their "kit" wedges others prefer specialist wedge brands or a mix of both.
I personally have PW and Gap wedge same as my irons and then 2 specialist Cleveland wedges as SW and LW.

I would agree that you could do with something between 43 and 55.

I must confess to being a little OCD with things like this, so would rather have all of my wedges in the same brand/style. I really like the look of the Cleveland CG15 wedges and they seem very reasonably priced.

I'm considering selling the Di11 PW and SW and replacing with 3 CG15's to give me better coverage. I got the whole set of Di11's for £149 so they worked out at only £21 per club - and I imagine I'd be able to sell them individually for £15-£20, given that they're essentially brand new.

I'd agree with Bob on this.

Something arounf the 50° mark would fill the gap.

Wedge set up is as personal as choosing a putter IMO. Some people like to hit fuller shots at greens so will have 4 wedges. Other like to manufactuer more and will carry les (2-3).

Depends how you like to play.

I wouldn't bank on getting £20 a club although you maybe able to trade the SW for £25 off a shiney new Cleveland on there trade in deal?

43 seems pretty strong for a PW. I would definitely be looking to even the gap up and would go 50, and 56 but I think the lesson to learn how to use them is crucial

Depending on how many clubs you have at the long end of the bag, I'd ditch the Wilson SW then get either 48, 52, 56, 60 if you have space for 4, or 48, 52, 56 or 48, 54, 60 if you only have room for 3.

I have a 46 degree Vokey, but there arent many of them about (its an SM4). Thats by the by, Regions gapping advise is sound just be aware of the different bounce options as if you drop your SW you will need something with higher bounce for the sand.

The best advise on here came from Bob, lessons really are money well spent particularly around the green, Ive had a brutal summer of not playing (work and travel) so haven't embarked on my lessons yet. I know you're saying you're OCD about having them the same but if you could live with it for a while buying one odd wedge to fill the gap while your pro sorts out your short game will in the long term allow you to make a better choice on the types of club/loft/bounce you need for your shiney matching set.

I have my final free group lesson tomorrow which is on the short game, and then I am signing up for 4 individual lessons, can't wait!

To be honest I think the PW is essentially a misbranded 9 iron! It seems incredibly low loft to be a wedge! I'm thinking about keeping the PW to be used as a shorter iron and ditching the kit SW given how little they cost and adding (initally) two wedges (say 48 and 56) then over time, taking that up to four wedges by adding (say) a 52 and 60 to "fill out the gaps".

I've been doing a lot of reading on the short game - Dave Pelz's short game bible has been very interesting and I'm looking forward to getting out there and getting on with my lessons now

Keep the PW, get a 50 degree gap and a 58 sand wedge.
