To play for the Wayfarers (Wales), is it your WHS hcp index that must be above 10 or the course playing hcp?

Our guys played recently and the opposition fielded a player with a WHS hcp of 8.5 (his playing hcp for that course was 10).

I've played Rabbits in north Yorkshire, 15 and above from memory, and the playing handicap is the benchmark, not your HI. I suspect it is the same in this instance as well.

I can understand why it would be the playing (course) hcp, but surely this means that when representing your Wayfarers team you'd have to be checking the course conversion chart for games played away...... a player with a WHS index of 8.5 may only get a course hcp of 9 elsewhere.

The WHS system has definitely thrown up some real 'head scratchers'.

What do the conditions of the competition say? I would have thought that Handicap limits should be clearly defined by the organisers.

It's not a 'single' competition, the Wayfarers are a golf league, open to affiliated clubs.
The league requires players to have a hcp of 10 or above.

Looks like I may need to get proper clarification from the Golf Union.

Surely the League itself will be able to answer your question, rather than the Golf Union?

Your Wayfarers Sec will surely know. I thought it was HI (or you'd have to pick team based on the course) but I can't remember as I have played in it for a while.

Which club are you at? I'm Newport.
Our Wayfarers team have always been players with a HI of 10 and above and this is the first time it has come to light that an opposing team appears to be using course hcps.
Our guys just accepted the situation, especially seeing as matches are played off scratch, but I thought it was worth finding out if it is HI or course hcp...... could make a difference with our team selections in future, lol.

Either that or at the beginning of the season the league check all the member clubs and work out what keeps you above 10 at every course.

Ultimately, if the idea back in the day was to have everyone over 10 then the new system has to adjust accordingly to take into account the new system.
