The only downside is that rinsing soap and shower gel off takes longer.

I have lived in a soft water area for nearly 40 years I very quickly learnt to use a lot less soap in the first place.

I have lived in a soft water area for nearly 40 years I very quickly learnt to use a lot less soap in the first place.

Of course I figured that out very quickly, but even doing that, it still takes much longer to rinse off. I reckon it is a chemistry thing: the hydrophilic end of the soap molecules must be significantly less attracted to soft water.
