After playing nine holes today, badly i might add without a warm up ive realised just how important the warm up is.Normally i warm up with stretches, plenty of swings with the club then into the nets for ten minutes and i finish with a few putts, how do you warm up and for how long? And if you dont how do you feel it effects your game?

I never bother with a proper warm up, just a couple of swings with my 5 iron before I hit my first tee shot. I dont feel that it has ever really effected my game.

9/10 putts of varying length, perhaps a similar number of chips and about 4/5 practice swings on the first tee. I've done all the drills, nets, even been on a field at 6:30 before an important final. Never played any better as a result though. So long as you can hit that first drive free and easy it's whatevers right for you. To me as long at you are relaxed and in the right frame of mind then no amount of "warm up" will add much to that.

Always arrive about an hour before my tee time (for a comp at least), I don't like rushing as I feel I take it onto the course. Start with a few stretches, hit 20 or 30 mid irons followed by 10 of whatever I am gonna hit off the 1st tee. 15 minutes chipping, 20 or so wedges up to 75 yds, 10 mins putting of various lengths and a cuppa from the hut on the 1st tee.

If I don't warm up my round is usually over within the 1st 6 holes

About 60-75 minutes before hand for me. I go through some stretches and loosening exercises and usually go to swinging two clubs together (slowly). Start hitting some 3/4 wedges and then build up. Normally about 10 balls with short irons, 10 with mid irons, 5 each with hybrid and 5W and 5 each with 3W and driver. Usually hit another 10 from the bunker and then go to the putting green. Hit a few long ones to get the speed and then make a few 10 footers. I try not to worry about the short ones ans I don't want any negative memories if I miss. Maybe a few chips, quick pit stop, collect my card and onto the tee to carve one OB or into the pond

I dont really warm up as on a friday i go to play straight from work so i consider that my warm up. At weekends i tend to play at first light so i am back early to spend quality family time. I do tend to warm up a bit then but just a few swings normally.

I dont really think it makes that much of a difference to me at the moment as i am new to the game and fairly up and down. When i improve and have a regular swing i might reconsider this but at the moment it works for me.

3 practice swings with the club I'm going to use, step in to the ball and steer one away up the 1st.

If I have the time and inclination I'll have about 5 putts then go hit five wedges, three 7 irons, 3 hybrids and 3 drivers. Clip a few pitch shots and then go to the tee.

Stretching, turning and neck-pulls. (5 mins?)

A dozen balls in the net, for strike, don't worry about where it would have gone. (5 minutes)

Hit the 1st tee!

- - - - - - -

Pull it way left of the 1st green, decide my grip is plenty strong enough, then slice it for the next few holes.

Find my mojo by the 4th, play 5th and 6th as par 5s, hope to be less than +4 after 6 holes.

Once I've got over the lake on the 7th, I relax and normally play the last 11 to about 5 or 6.....

:)

Well iv just carried on from what we used to do playing football where its the single most important thing before a game.....
Ill do some back stretches some hamstring stretches and some calf stretches......
Then the neck and arms.......
After that ill take a 4 and 5 iron together and swing them at shoulder height waist height and knee height a few times and then do some putting........

I know it sounds like alot but it only takes 10 mins and im nice and loose for the first tee.......simples :D :D

I dont half get some odd looks though......

Clubs out the boot of the car, onto the GoKart and wander over to the pro shop/first tee. Roll a fag.
Tee the ball up, pull the driver out, couple of practice swings, big puff of the fag and smack it up the jacksie.
We're away on a rollercoaster ride. 24 points or 37? Dunno, just see what the day brings.
Practice putting green... What's that?
Nets?? They're what fishermen use aren't they?

;)

Homer,

What with the time dedicated to your warm up, the regular practice, the lessons and the vast amount of time spent playing do you never just think you are doing ALL that and not getting better?

I am not having a pop but I would give up on all the other stuff and just play golf.

What are you trying to achieve?

3 min walk to first tee, scratch my plums, pull kex out of crack then send the ball soaring.................... OB

Mean to warm up but generally never seem to have the time

My warm up is usually a run to the first tee trying not to choke on my roll and sausage.

My new club has a putting green next t the 1st so I will probably do more than I have ever done in the past.

I feel I have to agree - just play....

Nope. Its something I've always done and to be honest I don't feel comfy just turning up swinging the club a few times and going off. It puts me off and I struggle to find any sort of rhythmn or timing. It's not the warm up that is the problem. Its been a lack of short game primarily with a few errant drives. Not hitting a ball for nearly a fortnight may have helped or put me back. We'll know when I next go out but I'll see how I'm doing when I go and see how the short game is fairing tomorrow
