I'm sure loads of us mentally go over our rounds, maybe while trying to get off to sleep. If I've had a good round, I like to ”keep it alive" in my head.

Very bad insomnia last night, so I started visualising my ideal round.

My new course requires definite lines off the tee...there are plenty of fairway bunkers to catch shots which are nicely down the middle!

So I'm mentally playing...
1st...
tee shot left centre ,2nd shot goes over brow of hill ,3rd up and on to green.

2nd
tee shot sails over right hand bunker, 2nd avoids gathering bunkers and rolls onto green

Etc

Every shot was one I knew I had done at some point, just not all strung together.

So this morning, (after very little sleep) I've got this lovely round in my head.

And I played some of my best golf in ages!

(Shame I didn't visualise perfect chips for when I missed the green!)

Yeah I've done similar, either while trying to drop off or stuck in traffic

Thinking back it seems I'm mostly thinking about tee shots and approach's rather then putts though. It cant hurt to have a memory of playing a good round fresh in your head when you step on the tee

I've thought about perfect chips too but there was a perfect fillet steak sitting next to it :D

My perfect round in my head often has wider fairways, less water on the greens and a shot shape for every hole lol.

Better still, do this at the range.

Hit your opening tee shot, see where it goes and estimate what flag you'd be hitting to next. I go round our course in about 5 minutes. Keeps you using every club and visualising shots to be made.

That's my tactic for dropping off to sleep. Next time I've got a couple of hours spare I'm going to take a small notebook and plot the round out on paper and try and follow that when I'm out on the course. Will be interesting to see if it helps or not.

I tried this last night. Played beautifully from tee to green but just couldn't get any putts to drop. greens were unbelievably slow :mmm:

I sometimes unintentionally visualize the perfect round when trying to nod off. Then the adrenaline starts pumping at how good the golf is i'm playing and I'm wide awake for the next few hours!

It's a vicious cycle.

I've done similar at my home course lately going through hole by hole, but from green to tee.
Asking myself where is best position on green (relative to most pin positions) and where is best place in fairway to reach that point (with what club)...and try and repeat the process back to the tee
My course management has deffo improved since starting this approach

I tend to go through that days round in my head in bed. Not sure I take too much from it (I prefer the harsh reality of Scoresaver 2 or Game Golf stats). Some rounds are more likely to induce nightmares rather than peaceful sleep
