Vanity handicappers vs banditos

Kind of agree with the above.
I don't know to many of either, though I know a few golfers who refuse to put in cards because they believe the system is stupid and use their five year old handicaps for social play which are probably not a true reflection of their abilities.

How exactly do you determine a vanity handicapper ? Monday I shot +10 didn’t actually play that bad greens had been just cored and greens full of sand and putting was horrible as a result. This morning I shot -2 on probably a harder course. I’ve noticed myself mid/ high handicap players seem to think low single figure golfers are robots and don’t have blow up games. I can play horrible sometimes like everyone but difference is I can also beat the course regularly as well.

If you beat the course 'regularly' I'd suggest your handicap is too high.

As of today in Ireland there is a change in WHS, being trialled here for 2025 with view to be introduced in other countries in 2026.
Clubs can now decide if they set competition playing handicap as either 85% , 90%, remain the same at 95% or increase to full 100% of course handicap.
My club have decided at 85%
As an example - an 18.0 index player would have a course handicap of 20 off the white tees.
So previously a playing handicap of 19
This will now drop to 17
Will be interesting to see the impact on scoring.

Basically a higher handicap player will lose more shots than lower players.

I know already it's caused issues in clubs in deciding what to introduce, depends really if your committee is made up of mostly low or high handicap players and how they view it.

At which point your ability gets found out and you look daft
I attended a golf conference a few years ago where there was a visitor from the USGA. His topic was great and hilarious - the USGA does follow up on players who have been accepted and played in US Open qualifying, but have had abysmal scores. He reported some of the responses they had received, such as, "I couldn't make it, but sent my brother. He said that he had shot 78, not 97."

We have one guy who plays as a guest in our society and he is single figures. When I last played with him the course was non qualifying as the 1st was a par 3 instead of a par 5 due to work. As a society we agreed to play it as a warm up hole and just count 17 holes. I noticed he put a card in (no idea who scored it) and he claimed a 2 on the first. He also had a couple of very generous gimmes from one of the group. He has also got the nickname ‘2 balls’ as he has been known to drop a ball from his pocket when searching! He doesn’t enter opens so not sure why he wants the low handicap as he never plays to it

To be able to say, even if its deception of both himself and others, that he has that handicap. Every golfer takes some satisfaction or pride in their handicap as a measure if their standing or ability in the game. Some, so much, that they cannot restrain themselves from faking it. Ego combined with insecurity.
