Played Dunbar today in blustery conditions, but what a cracking true links golf course, especially from the new tiger tees. I’m not surprised it will be used in qualifying for the 2013 open at Muirfield.

Anyway, playing the 17th I aimed up the 6th fairway that runs parallel and as sure as hell I hooked the ball tight against the wall. I played the shot left handed with my 4 iron and was told, in a friendly way as it was just a bounce game with my mates, that you can’t use the back of the club, only the face. The only club you can use the back is the putter.

True or false.

True I believe, think you have to turn the club up so the toe is pointing down (R/H Club) to play left handed.

Perfectly ok to use the back of the clubhead.

The rules only say that you must use the head of the club to hit the ball - not which part of the club head (provided the club is a conforming club and that you "strike fairly at the ball")

See the Decisions on the rules of golf 14-1/1 which clarifies this.

Ps Leftie asked this just a day or so ago...
