Using a tee on par 3's

our par 3's are pretty long so i always use a tee there. on shorter par 3's at other courses i wouldn't use one if it was a PW or 9 iron if the tee box was in good nick, i think not using one on the tee box can make you feel more comfortable hitting the same club from the fairway

If i want to hit an iron and hit the ball lower and take the spin off,i'll tee the ball up about the same height as i would a 3 wood.Normally i'll tee it just slightly proud of the ground, hitting the ball from a tighter lie is more likely to add height and spin.

I use a tee for 6 and below. 7 and above I find a nice level smooth part of the box.. I just feel better playing off the deck.. Just me I suppose...

im the same as this. if i hit a 9 iron off a tee it just shoots to the right. im more used to hitting these irons out of the course so it seems un-natural just to tee it up on wooden pegs twice or 3 times a round.

especaily in the summer i like to punch my short irons in so i do not want it sitting on a tee. i have used a tee for the longer par 3's this winter as i am currently sweeping the ball abit more so as not to hit it fat with the soft turf which i am inclined to do at the minute.

Using a tee is the only time that you get an advantage in the game. You should do it every time without fail. If you don't, you're a very silly boy.

Oh thank you dear Snell, you're such a charmer...:blah: Maybe you're getting a bit lazy though, because your wind ups are becoming generally weaker.... Maybe a rest and a nice Cohiba would invigorate the soul a touch...

You might be right Snelly, I don't use a tee, and I can be known to be an idiot. I kept shanking the ball off a tee with an iron, but not off the fairway. Simple solution don't tee it up. perhaps not as stupid as I look.:ears:

whatever works for you bud ! i would expect my flight to be higher if i used a tee to that extent!

Bluewolf, Richart,

Right. So do you just drop the ball and whack it from wherever it lands on the tee? Or do you carefully select the ideal lie with the ball in the perfect position to be cleanly hit? The latter I presume otherwise that really would be a bit silly....

If you want to hit the ball lower, tee it really low so it is just proud of the ground.

As I said before, it is the one chance you get for a better than perfect lie so take it.

In terms of my use of the word idiot, well it was inflammatory and unecessary and if I could edit the post I would.

Please accept my apologies and I mean that sincerely.

of course we select a nice bit of the tee box. we are hardly going to drop it in a divot! its the same as you. id imagine you dont stick ur tee in a divot or mucky patch!

No need to apologise to me mate. I took it in the spirit it was (hopefully) intended. All I will say on the matter is that more often than not I wont use a tee. If you want to then feel free. I won't stand back and think "well, he's doing it all wrong." You have your way, I have mine. It works for me. I like it. No amount of t'interweb pestering is going to change my mind. Why does it have to be a Black/White issue? Gary Coleman called it Different strokes for different folks.

Oh, and I'm beginning to think that there are too many Spongebobs on this forum. I might have to change my avatar.....

we have a 190 yard par 3 that I sometimes use a tee on. I just can't deciede if its a 5/6 iron from the deck or a nice lofted 4/5 iron tee'd up. All combinations have had varying degrees of success. All the rest its just a simple case of chuck ball down and hit it.

Same as quite a few others for me, don't use a tee for a 7 iron or lower. Don't know exactly how I came to this but it feels really weird if I sit it on a tee now, I will always go with what gives me the most confidence.

I never used to til I played with a 2 handicapper and he always uses one, his response after I asked him was why not have the best lie possible.

Since then I always peg it up but only so it just sits up.

And in any case, it's compulsary at my gaff.

Never heard that before. Presumably you are not allowed to take a divot even when hitting off a tee ? Strangely I play with quite a few people who don't use a tee. Perhaps it's because our tees are flat with plenty of grass. The greenkeeper does provide me with a nice container of soil and seed to fill my divots. ;)

Anyone who does struggle with hitting irons into par 3's off tee pegs, but hits them well off the fairway, consider not teeing up.
