Updating courses on a Garmin S1

I've just been given a Garmin S1 for my birthday, and decided I may as well make sure it is up to date.

Has anyone here run the Garmin Course Updater application on Windows XP SP2?

The Garmin website says that SP3 is required, but I know this is a common requirement given by many software vendors and is not always actually true. If I contact Garmin support they are bound to tell me to update to SP3 before anything else, and I'd rather not go to all that bother unless it's really necessary. So I thought I'd ask here first to see if anyone has any experience in this area.

updated recently (no updates found mind you and the watch is 9 mths old!) I'm on XP sp3 though

cant see any harm in trying it, whats the worst that can happen? it doesnt update.....if there are any updates

Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear. I have no worries about running the Garmin Course Updater application. Indeed I have installed and run it - but it never finds my S1 (clicking on "Search for Device" does nothing and leaves the "Continue" button disabled). So I just wanted to ask if anyone has successfully run it on SP2. It's going to the bother of installing SP3 that I wanted to avoid.

On another related note: is there any way of finding out what courses are in the S1? As far as I can fathom, you just hit "Start Round" and it searches for nearby courses. So I can't find if it has courses other than those nearby. I'm going to Belek (Turkey) in 3 weeks and wanted to check that it has the courses I'll be playing.

Thanks - the courses I'll be playing are indeed listed.

But of course until I find a way to have my own S1 detected on the PC, I can't verify they are on it for certain - although it seems like they will be given it is a new unit.

If nobody out there can tell me whether it works on XP SP2 in the next few days, I'll install SP3 and try again. If it still doesn't work after that, I'll contact Garmin support.

Just d/load SP3, set up d/load, watch movie, d/load complete, Garmin S1 now works on your pc, result

Just a quick note to report that after installing the XP SP3 patch, my PC then recognised the Garmin S1 and I was able to run the course updater.

Interestingly, the crucial change that happened was that the S1 was detected as a USB mass storage device, when it wasn't under XP SP2. I am somewhat surprised that changing to SP3 was key to this - USB mass storage devices have been routinely detected since long before SP3. Perhaps the S1 has a peculiar mode of operation?
