Went to see a couple of things recently (Tubular Bells this weekend). When did it become a thing for the backlighting to be so strong it blinds the audience? I went to hear and see the acts, there is no need to bathe the audience in light, we are not the subject. I got quite cross with the lighting crews  it really detracted from the whole experience for me.

Checked with my lad. Very much depends. If the venue was a small standing venue cap 200-300 and the band aren’t offering anything different/special in their show, then £40 is highly excessive for a basic tribute band - but if it’s a theatre as opposed to a club venue, venue cost jumps significantly. Bottom line is that it’s the band who choose the venue and set the ticket price according to how much the see themselves being worth.

If the venue is a theatre or the band are offering a greater experience than just covers…see for instance The Musical Box…a band that meticulously re-enacts Gabriel era Genesis concerts and you are in a big theatre such as they normally play…then £40 is very good value.

But as in all such things…a high ticket price is only a rip off if you don’t get what was advertised or that you expected for your money.
It's a small provincial theatre, capacity 600.

They have got a load of tribute acts booked - Floyd, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Elvis etc. I've never heard of any of the tribute acts, so doubt they are the "premier" ones. All tickets are £35-£40. For example, The British Carpenters (who?) are £38 a pop.

The theatre used to be run by the local council, but is now run by some corporate mob who also manage a number of arenas, including the 11,000 one in Newcastle. I guess this might have have something to do with the exorbitant pricing.

I often see a lot of tribute acts at Sub-89. Some very good musicians and some very close to the real thing. Is £40 excessive? Possibly but it would depend on the size of the venue and the act. Australian Pink Floyd tickets are around this mark and worth every penny for the show they put on
They are very well known and have a great reputation.

Our local theatre have The UK Pink Floyd Experience instead, no idea where they rank in the pantheon of tribute acts? £35 a ticket.

I’m thinking the ticket prices are as they are as it is a theatre as opposed to a bigger club venue…I believe the hire cost is quite different…but it’s the band who chooses the venue. Of course if there is no similar cap venue locally they are rather stuck with what’s available.

I have to say though that I am of the view that nothing is actually exorbitant unless you have to buy it and it is priced high to take advantage of that necessity. It’s just a pity that that’s the market.

How was it in my old hood. Lived about a mile away from The Cavern so seen a lot of good bands in there.
The Half Moon in Putney use to be the other great pub type venue. I think Stillmarillion are doing an all day even there for Marillion fans and they are excellent live
Well it’s certainly compact and bijou, you don’t need many for it to appear full, be pushed to get more than 100 in there.
Great atmosphere though and a good gig
Their venues own advertising says
“We don’t serve Food
We don’t do Coffee
We serve beer & Rock n roll “

Since we are in Chesterfield we are going into town this evening to see/hear The Northern Requiem, a brand new poetry and choral work that shines a light on the communities who were robbed of their livelihoods (and future) when the pits were closed - with particular focus on the part that women played during the miner’s strikes.

My wife’s childhood best friend (and still neighbour to my MiL) is in the choir which is nice as she has been hugely supportive of my wife these last three years. I expect it to be very emotional.

On Thursday went to the Royal Albert Hall to see Paul Carrack, he of Ace, Mike & The Mechanics, Roxy Music, Squeeze & Madness fame

Fabulous gig, special guest was Andy Fairweather Low of Amen Corner fame, and at 76 he is absolutely outstanding,
The venue plus a 180 voice choir was so good, great acoustics and what a talented/ under rated guy PC is

If you get the chance to see him, just do it, well worth it 😎😎🤘

went to SOILWORK & ARCH ENEMY & IN FLAMES last week
really enjoyed Soilwork and especially In Flames. Arch Enemy encountered sound problems and had a 30 minute break after 3 songs
Gasometer is not a good location because of its rotund structure most spectators have a lateral view of the stage

next month: DRACONIAN
