I used to love Ryan Adams. Gold is an absolutely timeless album. Saw him on that Gold tour circa 2001 at the Astoria in London (RIP). One of the top 5 best gigs I've ever been to. He was off his face on coke and had broken his strumming hand the previous day punching a door at the previous day's venue. My first exposure to anything Ryan Adams…playing solo - acoustic guitars and piano…
Was he brilliant? Oh yes indeed he was. Did his beautiful singing and playing create an almost hypnotic atmosphere…absolutely. Was he a bit bonkers and ‘random’…yup. Was it fun?…well ‘fun’ isn’t exactly how I’d describe it…but it was certainly very enjoyable. And he played for 3hrs…not including the 20mins break…he enjoyed the evening as did an almost full Barbican.
Was still captivating and played well past curfew, giving us an acoustic set and full band set.
My opinion has been marred a bit though, given his sexual abuse allegations in recent years.
But It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that he still puts on an incredible show.
