First qualifying medal of the year for us today.

My game has been really good lately, with the exception of my driving.

I've been playing around my handicap and sometimes below despite only hitting 4 or 5 fairways per round, and on average having to chip out after a bad drive a couple of times a round.

Irons have been reasonable, but chipping and putting have held my scores together, getting up and down a lot, and making my share of birdie putts.

I tried something slightly different with my swing today, and the result was the best ball striking round I've had in a long time.
12/15 fairways hit. Of the 3 I missed, one was a lovely high draw where I hadn't played for a draw, one was exactly where I was aiming as I like playing in from the rough on that side of the fairway, and one was a double crossed cut.

GIR's weren't as good as my striking suggested but this little change I made saw me pull a few irons maybe 15' and I'll get used to it so happy enough there, especially as I had 2 birdies that were both 7 irons to inside 3'.

Chipping and putting completely AWOL. :angry:

3 putted from about 10' twice, putted off the green 3 times, and (not strictly true as from the fringe) 5 putted once!! The 5th putt was a 3 footer too!

Result = 86 blows.

The improvement off the tee also might have been because I'm booked in for a driver fitting this week

So as the title suggests.... typical! One part comes good and another doesn't show up at all.

sounds similar to me at the moment. my game from 80 yards in is rubbish. shot 84 today and I could have comfortably gone round in 78 with a half decent short game,

do you wanna buy a nearly new Yes putter !!

I drove it beautifully today, struck my irons well, short game totally AWOL. Three putted five times which ended up the difference between 0.1 back or a 0.2 cut.

Improved in the back nine but the damage was done; 43 out, 36 back

Definitely the workman today. I was happy walking off the course as I know it was a blip and it'll be back.

It was almost comical really. No touch whatsoever. The amount of times I knocked the first putt 10' past anyone would think I wanted 0.1 back!

If my putting coming back coincides with my driving disappearing then I really will be peeved.

Good to hear you played. I know what you mean though. The bit that was going well falls apart and the poor part rights itself.

I am having similar issues. I seem to have lost distance control and knocking them 3-6 feet by even on the practice green. Hoping it's just early season rust

Can't remember the last time all of my game was firing at the same time..

It's been a week and a half since I swung a club and will be nearly 2 whole weeks by the time I do - an eternity for me.
No idea what I'm going to find on Wednesday....First Medal may be a week after that, not sure of dates, but what will be will be.

I find this post quite reassuring, played my first round this morning in about 8 weeks and my whole game has gone missing or at least the little bit I'd developed last year. 3 putted everything, left all my chips and pitches way short, topped my rescue club 3 times so gave up with that and pulled all my irons a good 20ft left, most of the time which more often than not put me in a bunker that then took 2-3 to get out..... Was starting to think it might not be the game for me until paring the 14th & 17th so will be back down the range tomorrow night to work on the basics again.

I'm shanking all my mid to long irons, iron play used to be the best part of my game.

First medal of the year tomorrow, it's going to be another round where I don't touch anything longer than a 7 iron so my 9 wood and hybrid will be getting a lot of use.

Went to the range this afternoon to try and get a swing with my long irons but shanked half of them and those I did hit were awful, I'm coming over the top and can't stop doing it whatever I try. :angry:

I despair!

Not one for worrying about how many putts I take, the more GIR's the more putts generally.... not a great fan of 4 (or 5) putting though

Feel your pain Gary. Missed a birdie from 4 feet on the 1st, from 3 feet on the 2nd. A par from 3 feet on the 3rd, and from 4 feet on the 4th. The par 5 8th I was in the greenside bunker in 2, sitting nicely and came off with a 6. The back 9 was just as frustrating..

Hit the ball better than I have done for weeks but failed to capitalise. Hit 11 out of 14 fairways, and only 7 greens but only just, 32 putts which is lousey for me.

yep same at our place forget flying long irons onto the greens , no point .. our order of merit is always strokes , greens are so quick & strokes scores are bit mad so they played it as stableford , 40pts today, so hopefuly a decent first cut of the year ..

For those playing bad , keep at it. ive been playing like a dog the last few weeks , just clicked today , there is hope , keep plugging away

Thanks guys i tell ya i was starting to wonder , have been playing dirt , great start today 3 pars , eagle , bogey, then 4 pars to turn -1 for 23 pts .. we got stuck behind a society & everything ground to a halt, lipped out for birdies on 11, 12 &15.. lipped for bogeys on 13 16 & 17.. were good putts but the greens are like glass ..

enjoy the good & put up with the bad i suppose ?
