Could he have asked for a video reply in the results office. Surely with the current amount of people calling in on seeing the highlights programme should something like an 18 hour "provisional" score be applied and you sign your previous days card prior to commencing your next round.
As Padraig said he was convinced it came back to rest in the same spot thus he seen no reason to call for a ruling.

It would have made much more sense to call over the ref at the time, he could then ensure the ball was replaced without penalty, if he waited till the end he would have still had a two shot penalty.
