Me, I play inland and links and all my early golf was links. In the wind it’s hit and miss to throw the ball high in the air. Over time I learned to manufacture shots and now I only have three, PW (48), 54 and 58. I use the PW from 110 yards in and I sometimes use it around the greens, if I’ve got green to work with. The 54 I use when I want a high full shot from around 80 yards in. I also use the 54 around the greens a lot. I only use the 58 when I need to lob the ball with a tight pin position. It also does as my sand wedge and an extra lob wedge with the face open a little.
I sometimes think I would be better off with another wedge but my set of clubs is complete for my game. In other words each club from my driver down to the PW is in increments that make it possible for me to club from a specific distance without any major gaps.

I carry 3 only
Standard Ping Eye5 PW and also a 52 and 58 degree.
I never ever hit a full wedge or sw. Its a shot I just dont like and am more of a knock down punchy man. From 110 I am more likely to punch in a 3/4 nine iron as I get more control and am more comfortable with that shot. May seem daft to people but thats my style of play. Love the 52 degree from 60 yards in, just punch and zip or get the ball on the green and let it role out.
58 is for what is says on the tin. Its for lobs over bunkers, from bunkers, deep rough etc or to put it close to the pin where I have very little room to run a shot.

Thecraw, like your style there mate.
I practise the punchy shots at targets down the range a lot and they are of great use on the course.
Your point about control is really valid, control and feel are crucial in the short game and by playing 3/4 swings you are maximising the chances of a clean, accurate shot.

craw and mwj I completely agree. Wedges are scoring clubs. Accuracy not distance is the key.

Reminds me of dave pels. He has the finesse swing for wedges and power swing for full shots! I like to play about with it a bit. feel is everything!

me too, htl. The 64 is difficult to get right, great when you do but I'm inclined to think I got the wrong one and should have got the 60. In mitigation I did get it before I joined the forum.

Only 3 now, 48, 54, and 58. Have ditched the 60 and 64 as too unreliable, and can play the same shots with the 58. 52 got sold last year, and 56 is in the attic. Too much choice gets confusing, so going to stick with the 3 gamers.

Seems that way, I will try just using the pw, 52 & 60 this weekend if I get out.

I kinda have to play 4 wedges due to our course set-up. We have lots of elevated greens protected by bunkers requiring cut up shots from tight lies. It's impossible to play these consistently without a low bounce 60* wedge.
We also have two types of bunker. Deep and sandy and thin and muddy. This requires two different wedges.
So I carry 48* 52* 58* and 60*
