Too many wedges?

Saw a guy yesterday at the range and had a chat with him.

He said that he carries 5, yes 5! wedges. 52, 54, 56, 58, 60.

To me this is a joke, it really is. I carry PW GW and 60deg in my bag and sometimes feel that even 3 is excessive.

What do you reckon folks, personally I think the guy is a mentalist.

Definately a mong, im one for liking more wedges than the average. At the moment i Carry 52,56,60 no PW at the mo till i get my new set but eventually i will have so four wedges! which i think i need for my game. i did have 3 but that 40 yard gap between the pw and sw had to be filled so i structured my new set with 4 deg lofts. Fair?
But back to the question. it is unnecessary.
If i were too add another wedge id get a 64 on top of my current setup, but i wouldnt even do that, to have 2degree spaces is ridiculous.

Personally I think 5 is a little bit on the excessive side. Considering the fact the gap between each one is so minimal.

Although I’m not much better as I carry 4.

I use PW 52, 56, 60 and will more than likley drop the 56 wedge. That dude is mental with all them wedges, I struggle getting any distance with my wedges.

You have to say that carrying that many wedges shows a distinct lack of golfing imagination. The man obviousely has one swing for everything... A little bizzare.

PW as well lol I can understand him practicing with them all to get a feel and picking 2-3 for the day but always 5 wedges without a PW is daft as a gate post

The guy had no PW! I cannot understand it but he reckons it works for him. Ha.

I am looking at ditching the GW in place of a 56 to match my 60 as I feel that this will work for me so will have PW, 56 and 60.

They say it is best to have the same style wedges, it helps with consistancy.

That is just daft!!!

The ideal gap is 4 or 5 degrees. GM ran a test on wedges last year

If you are planning to drop your 56 you may find that you would also like to replace the 60 with a 58 as 8 degress is quite a gap

I own PW, 52, 56 and 60 but only ever carry three of them. I let conditions dictate which one gets dropped (usually the 56). Seems to work for me and besides, I love manufacturing shots like the old boys always talked about before Kit makers worked out they could fleece us with chippers, wedges etc.

According to Dave Pelz (what do you think of him?)

If you have 4 wedges and three different length swings, say knee high, 3 quarter back, and full swing, then that gives you 12 different distances.

All you need to do is practice each at the range, learn your distances and you'll never be stuck!

I carry 3 PW, SW and 60 degree lob wedge but there is still quite a gap between the PW and SW so am tempted to get a 50 degree wedge to split the difference.

I carry PW 52 and 58. I love my 58 as I think it combines the best of the 56 and 60.

I have PW, SW and 64 degree, I alter my swing to adjust the distance and loft etc.
Loads of people don't get on with the 64 degree wedge but I love it.

I'm working my way through the Dave Pelz short game book but I have foud that it is only necessary to carry 3 wedges (PW SW and LW) and utilise the 3 swings lengths.

I can't justify carrying an extra wedge when the distances between each club appears to be fairly uniform (8 yards different between PW and SW and 11 yards from SW to LW on an 8 o'clock knee high swing and 15 yards between PW and SW and 17 yards between SW and LW on a 9 o'clock swing)

Incidentally, I prefer my new Mizuno wedge to the Vokey I had before!
