Played today in a medal. Guy hits his tee shot and we see it bounce into a very small bush which often catches errant tee shots. It's pretty sparse and most times the ball is around the roots, anyway we walk up and he can't find it, after looking for around 2 mins he says he will go back and hit a provisional before the group behind arrive on the tee. After he hits this I find his original ball stick on a branch! Anyone know the ruling here? Would he have to play his provisional or is he ok to play the original as he didn't declAre it lost.

Thanks

2nd ball isn't a Provisional, as soon as he hits it it becomes the ball in play - 3 off the tee.
Provisional ball has to played without going forward more than a few yards.

You can't go back and hit a provisional ball like this.

The stroke he made from the tee was his 3rd, and his original ball became lost when he made it.

perhaps a little more than that
up to 50 maybe. buy correct his 2nd is the ball in play.

That's what I thought. So just to confirm when we walked up and realised his ball was lost he should of returned to the tee and played another drive and that's now his in play ball

if you think you might have lost your tee shot it's a good idea to play a Provisional. you may walk forward a little way and decide you should play a Provisional. A little way is just that.... you can't walk to where you think your ball is then decide to go back and play a Provisional while your mates keep looking. if you do that it becomes the ball in play

This is incorrect. You must announce intention and then take a provisional before you or your partner moves forward to search for the ball. If you move forward and then go back and retake from the tee, this is ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance, its not a provisional.

You might want to check the last updates from the R&A on that one. paddy's correct

Welcome by the way ;)
