Tips for Combating the 'Dunkirk Spirit' and 'Blitz Mentality'

It is all about social conscious.
How would a selfish elderly person feel if their actions resulted in the death of a close friend.
Might be worth asking.

As for the Blitz spirit it may well be worth mentioning that crime increased substantially from 1939 to 1945.
When it was substantially lower than now.

The thing is..."It's not all about You". If you continue to just 'swan about' irregardless then you'll get it & spread it...... exactly NOT what's wanted. For god's sake please explain to him its not an insult to his fitness as a 72 year old...... his defiance is in fact his weakness!!
He is no more capable of getting it and spreading it than people of any age, it doesnt work like that.

No, but he is considerably more likely to require hospital treatment if he does get it, which I believe is the main reason for isolating. They are looking to spread out the number of cases so that the NHS can hopefully cope rather than being overwhelmed by a lot of cases all at once. They're still going to need ICU beds for patients who have all of the usual day to day emergencies and if he's taking up a bed when it could have been avoided then someone else can't have it.

That's correct although some have been accusing old people of spreading the virus if they're outside which is wrong.

Yes... some people just cant see the bleeding obvious!!

So he’s selfish then?

IT IS NOT ONLY ABOUT THE PERSON WHO ISOLATES!

Argh. The public are idiots.

So you are of the view that we should be like most of Europe then - everybody except essential service workers should be in lock down

or are you of the view that it is ok for a 69 and 11 month old person to carry on as normal but not a 70 year old.

I spoke to my mum tonight, 80 and pretty healthy. She totally gets it. She is very active still, is in plenty of clubs, even runs one, a painting group. All cancelled for now, no problem.

My FiL, selfish and a pain. 83 and his wife is 78 with quite severe dementia. My wife has spent the last 24hrs battling with him, explaining to him why these measures are important, why they are designed to help him, other people, the NHS and yes, his wife. He wont have it still, was cursing when his bridge club of other oldies was cancelled, and has no intention of changing his behaviour. We are not even convinced he is following even the most basic advice of washing his hands more often. If it only affected him we would leave him to it but clearly there is a bigger impact here. We are continuing to push the point with him, we will not give up.

Blimey people like him are draining.

To the OP, good luck, I'm following this thread as closely as you will be for tips.

To be honest I think you'd have to be on another plant in order to be able to carry on as normal.

Read a few replies and I'm not surprised by the older gen doing what they are doing. If I were in my 80s and played golf 3 or 4 times a week eevry week and someone told me, sorry you can't do that now or you might die, then I'd probably take my chances.

Did anyone hear David Blunkett on the radio on Monday, that was his attitude, said if he was confined to his home it would probably kill him mentally first.

He may not be 'swanning around' but taking a walk in a safe environment, if hes not putting him self or others at risk then IMO hes doing nothing wrong, just keep away from gatherings and make an effort to keep human contact at a minimum. Like stated previously, it would be ok if he was 69 and 11 months old.

I think this is a Kamikaze attitude rather than Dunkirk Spirit ... but an easy mistake to make!! :p:p

How would they feel if they infected a close friend and that person died?
As others say it’s not about you it’s about others.
It’s at the point now where it’s past gently explaining to people that they’re doing wrong. We need to be strong and do what we can to force their hand.

On the evidence of what I saw in my club this afternoon, none of them care.
I was quite happily playing on my own when I was a approached by an older gentleman asking if they could hop in front and play the 18th. He was very polite and in normal conditions this is fine but given the state of affairs not wise. My understanding is this virus is contagious a few days before the carrier is aware. So either of us could be contagious and given it on.
Part of me subscribes to the Darwin natural selection and these people are selecting self extinction.. it’s just I was not trying to catch or pass anything myself.

Allotments should be ok

Just tell all the old people that the Post Office is closed, they'll have nowhere else to go :)
