Tips for breaking 100

Based on my experiences, the 3 and 5 wood are much more accurate. By that I mean there's less chance of it going horribly wrong. You can't hook or slice a wood half as much as you can with the Driver. I still don't have a driver in my bag, haven't tried one in a while but I hit my 3 wood good enough to not need one at the moment.

Not talking about accuracy, I'm talking about actually hitting it, its as easy to shank or top a 3 or 5 wood as it is a driver. The modern 3/5 woods probably have the same sized head as the old wooden drivers that people used to dread hitting, whereas people have much more confidence in their modern drivers. I know good players, cat 1 and 2 who have never got on with fairway woods and just have 3i and Driver at the top end, they play off 4 and 10 and both consider fairway woods too much of a risk.

I was in the same boat as you until the last month, I'd been hitting between 107 & 118.

i found I shot my 98/99/100 rounds by keeping the ball in play off the tee like many of the guys are saying, and chipping and putting need to be practiced so so much.

take Wednesday for example...I hit fairways with roughly 10 drives, the other 4 were either bunkered or in the long stuff but playable. Then my second or approach shots were terrible...my chipping got me within 10 feet and putting is what saved my card...most the par 4s I took 4 to get on due to the second and shot syndrome.

I also found taking a few days off and not thinking bout the game helped me...then turned up hit 20 balls on range bit of chipping and putting and off I went.

Dont over think or get mad cuz it will be the death of the round :)

good luck!

Ok, so I went out for my control round today by myself so I didn't have any pressures or have to worry about keeping up with better players.

My first mistake was not warming up or spending any time on the range or putting area before going out. This was due to only having a small window to get on the course before a comp was to begin. I felt that this probably had an impact on my first 3 Tee shots.

From there I didn't take notice of the par & instead concentrated on the 3 goals (posted by Foxholer/science boy). This was a great way for me to break down each hole into achievable targets.

I left my driver at home & used only my 20 degree hybrid & 4 iron from the tee. This also worked great (after I remembered to keep my head down), my shots mostly started to go a lot more in the direction I wanted them to.

I had a fairly rigid pre shot routine which I think helped to put me on the right track.... something i'm going to make a habit of from now on.

Lastly, I managed to borrow a friends Garmin approach S1 GPS. This really helped with making the right club selection.

I'm happy to say I went round a fairly windy course in 105. A 10 shot improvement from my previous best round.
Like a bit of a train spotter, I made notes all the way round & have highlighted the areas that need a bit more attention.

Hopefully this hasn't been a one off day but a sign of things to come!

Hi saintsman, I'm off 28 and I've broke the ton a few times just recently (off yellows).
I still have meltdowns though.
Last week in a comp I went out in 59 and was quite fed up but I decided that was history and got my head in shape for the back 9.
I came back in 46 with a 9 in there.
So, I failed to break 100 again but.... I got a 46 - off the whites.
Thats something to think about for me.
My idea of practice some time back was busting 70/80 balls on the range with a driver.
Today it was 60 balls between driver, hybrid, 6, 9 and PW and I practice putting and chipping at the club as often as I can (it's just 10mins away).
My Garmin watch has helped me immensely as I had little idea about club choice and distance now I know what each club is capable of - I don't worry about distance, just the right club for me.
Hitting the fairway off the tee - in a recent round I had a driver nightmare and at a tight tee on a par 5 I left it in the bag.
I was amazed at where my 5 iron put me when I switched.
Keep plugging away :)

Nice shooting mate, been inspired by this thread. Got in a quick 12 holes today after work, I was 14 over by the end which I was chuffed with, usually I'd be well over that.
Practiced chipping for 30 mins before going out which really helped get a feel for my swing and clubs.

If you use the 3 goals method properly it usually shows you that most shots are wasted by very poor tee shots (OB/Lost) and shots inside 100 yards.

Work on that wedge play, work on those 1/2 and 3/4 wedge shots (know your distances) and buy yourself a v-easy for putting!
