A question for those that played at Tidworth after the H4H day, are there any tips for the course that you can share? I would have liked to have joined you that day but only had the single day off work.

I'm taking up the chance to play it now though, I've entered the open that El Bandito mentioned in this thread. Still a few spots available according to the entry list, which I'm slightly surprised at - there aren't many open comps at this time of year, and at £30 for bacon roll, round of golf and buffet afterwards it's a bargain.

For the course itself, any advice will be gratefully received! Especially of course if your name happens to be El Bandito and it's your home course

Don't be panicked with the tanks rolling past, the gun shots and even helicopters running along the tree lines. Apart from that it's a lovely course, I really enjoyed it when I played there a few years ago....Although i still twitch thinking about the number of putts I missed because it felt like a sniper was taking pot shots at me on the greens.

Some nice holes on here , hit it straight and you will score well , best holes are in the middle of the course , with all the rain we have had it could be soft , you will enjoy it , ps dont carry your clubs

As I remember it:

1st - straight uphill par 4, fast green if past the pin
2nd - par 3, green runs front to back, so if dry will bounce forward (but a large hole front left, so start it a little right)
3rd - par 4 - go straight at marker post
4th - par 4 - fairway slopes left to right - green slopes left to right
5th - par 3 - don't miss left
6th - straight par 5
7th - par 4 - go straight over the post, or slightly left - only really need a long iron off the tee - green slopes front to back
8th - par 4 -good driving hole - let her rip
9th - par 4 dog leg - don't really need driver
10th - short par 4
11th - par 3 - everything goes right to left - green slopes front to back
12th - long par 4 - keep more right, fairways slopes and gives better line in for 2nd
13th - good par 3 - suits a draw
14th - par 5 - difficult to pick a line off the tee - depending on length, but probably best just left of the larger tree next to the 2nd tee, fairway slopes to the green making easy to over hit approach
15th - straight forward par 4 - green slopes well fro back to front
16th - par 4 - don't go too far right as the trees may block you out - green very slopey back to front & right to left
17th - par 4 - We all under hit our 2nd shots
18th - par 4 downhill - can run out of fairway if drive too far right, probably keep it just left of the marker post - fairway & green run away from you, making it easy to overhit approach shots

Hope that helps - I've only played it once so apologies if I missed anything or made slight memory errors - but that's how I recall it.

From what I remember of the course, it's a nice front 9, but the back 9 destroyed me, on the 17th it looks narrow, but it open up left after the brow of the hill, don't layup like I did, a good shot down the middle left will see you spot on.

The machine gun fire in the background is hardly noticeable after a while.

A very nice course, which if I'm ever in that neck of the woods again, I would happily play.

Cheers everyone. So in general, take earplugs but leave the keffiyeh at home, yes?

And JamesR, that's an amazing level of detail from someone who's played it once, thanks!

I'm looking forward to the day, all we need now is for it to not be raining a week on Saturday.

It's SPTA, it always bloody rains.

Last time I was round this way was last winter, I signed up for a thing called the Stonehenge Stomp which is a 40k walk with a reasonably strict time limit. Turned out to involve some of the most unpleasant horizontal freezing rain I've ever experienced :(.
