Dream Golf Experiences: What’s on Your Bucket List?

I'm lucky enough to have played Turnberry, before the prices went silly. Fabulous place to play, every aspect of it. Clubhouse, pro shop, staff, the course, all top notch and geared to helping you enjoy your time there. There is no advice in terms of the course, it's all there in front of you to see, no tricksy holes to catch you out. The one thing I would suggest, on the 9th hole, lighthouse, go and find the pro's tee. Quite an eye opener.

Courses I'd love to play, Sunningdale in the UK, Crans sur Sierre in Switzerland. Both look gorgeous. One day I'll price them up 🫣

I was selling a Crans sur Sierre trip to the wife last week...one day!

I'd love to play Pebble Beach or Torrey Pines. Doubt either will happen so I'd settle for another Old Course experience
I played Torrey Pines a few years ago, a couple of weeks after they held the Farmers Insurance PGA event so the rough was still brutal. It wasn’t that expensive as it is a municipal. The setting and views are magnificent but in reality the course is quite frankly a bit ordinary.

Wish you’d never told us that. 🤣

I'm not sure I have one really - the price of these places crushes the dream before it even takes hold. Speaking of Turnberry, I have been there 3 or 4 times for food etc as my wife's family lives near there, but not played the course - the price is insane so never likely to unfortunately. Would love to if one of them could get me a friends and family discount though. Apparently her cousin used to work there years ago so I missed out on that. Doh.

Royal Troon, Royal Portrush and St George’s Hill are the three I’d most like to play - and of those I’d take Troon

I am pleased I made the (correct) decision a few years ago to prioritise elite courses and therefore have already played the ones I most wanted to play already: Muirfield, Dornoch, Lytham, Turnberry, St George’s, Birkdale and obviously St Andrews and Sunningdale

My two regrets is that I didn’t join Dornoch when I had the chance to do so..and I didn’t play Troon when I was on an Ayrshire gold trip

It’s not just the money of the green fee, it’s time off work, time off work when you’re not doing other things like foreign holidays etc, transport and accom costs etc.

I reckon my RCD trip cost about £400 at least, including the £180 green fee, and I did everything as cheap as I could

I know I’m not going to be ever playing it again (but of course it was worth every penny!!)

In which case I'd go Pebble Beach and I wouldn't mind Hilton Head as a back up

1988 I was doing a California driving holiday with my then g/friend (now wife) and one day when staying in San Francisco we found ourselves at the entrance to Pebble Beach (as you do - totally random when I suggested the route for the day - The 17 Mile Drive).

And so we went in - we got out, and had a wander around (got the photo under the pine/cypress tree close to the 18th green). I popped into the pro shop for a look and asked if it's possible to play the course - the answer was 'absolutely..in fact there's a tee time free a little later this morning if you fancy - $100'. Now you might imagine what went through my mind - until my thoughts were brought into reality by 'we don't have the time, and our budget for the day is $60...so before you think further...sorry but no'.

Ho hum.

However there is still time - and unlike back then we now have the time and the means...

I’m sure Dunbar was a highlight for you too. 😉

BTW, live have played Royal Troon several times in the past as I know a member. It is fabulous. Gentle on the way out a a huge challenge on the way back.

Now Hilton Head (Harbourtown) really does live up to expectations, very tight, beautifully designed in a wonderful setting. The last plays very differently for mere mortals than the Pros though.

We have friends who live fairly close to Winged Foot... and they have built a retirement home in North Carolina with Pinehurst just a couple of hours drive away

You ok with £1k for a round?

My current attainable targets are Kings Barns and Castle Stuart or whatever it’s called these days.
I have a overnight when playing turnberry last time I played Alisa think it was £125 and juniors are half price so definitely worth it at that price.

If you're staying at Turnberry then the green fee is "only" £425....but your room will cost you the thick end of 400 quid so you're still paying 800 for a round of golf...
The rooms are cheap nowadays for a luxury get away plus free breakfast and free spa facilities. How did you find the £425 round price ? Seems hight Robert the Bruce was cant remember the price but last month when I stayed I’m sure it was something ridiculous like £60 a round and £30 for my boy, very cheap for a great course.

So many courses such little time. Still got to tick off RCD and 36 at Sunningdale.

Dream trip away would be a couple of weeks in the Melbourne sand belt with a pop over to King Island and Barnbougle.

The ones to sell my child, wife and dog for would be Cypress Point and Pine Valley.
