Re: Shot penalty... Outrageous.

Slow play is a curse on the Tours, but most Tour players can respond to one bad time and do enough to keep their noses clean. Guan is obviously much less experienced, but the kid has emerged from this with credit. He accepted the penalty in good grace and in truth it hasn't done him a lot of had,. He is T55, and without the penalty would be T48. He has done really well in making the cut and has secured the amateur prize ahead of the US and Amateur Championship winners and a few other amateurs who have played The Masters a few times. Imagine how he will do when he is 6 inches taller and a few stone heavier?

Re: Shot penalty... Outrageous.

I don't really get to see much pro golf so don't know who the key offenders are, but it does seem crazy how long they take. I mean you get to the ball you look at the shot, your told the distance the wind strength take a practice swing then step up hit it and go. However I could see why they take so long with the amount of information and shot choices ... such a dilemma! (Actually I can't , I lied, sorry).
I always find it amusing though to compare pro golf with club golf comps, seriously when and how many times have you had observers out on course to see where your ball has landed?? Of cause club golf will take longer, like many amatures I have a range of shots that can be randomly selected seeing my ball shoot off to all kind of places, causing some searches and provisionals to be played. All of which are just time consuming, play with some one who thinks hitting his driver 260+yards into the scrub at every opportunity and frankly your in for a long day! (Possible solution... You cannot use a driver until you have reached a certain handicap level, might make you a better player in the end if that were applied!;) )

Re: Shot penalty... Outrageous.

key point is that most pro's when warned do something about it. Then they are on the clock if they haven't sped up. As Jack said he would have been warned more than once, Jack also said he (Guan) had taken an extraordinarily long time debating a shot with his caddy- not like Jack to make that comment so I'm guessing it was extra long

Re: Shot penalty... Outrageous.

the young lad would be short off the tee every time so he doesnt get to look at how the wind affects the other players balls. he is the guinea pig every time. he would need to take his time.

he managed to get it round without any big numbers on his card. he didnt muck around hitting doubles, triples or worse. he thought his way around really well and made every shot count!

still fuming about this!

Re: Shot penalty... Outrageous.

I think all anyone wants is an even playing field and consistency. I doubt whether anyone else will be pinged for slow play this weekend and doubt the PGA will invoke any penalties next week, the week after or all season.

The way the leaderboard is looking, it seems likely that Guan will be playing with Keegan Bradley tomorrow, out first...

Expect a 7 hour round. Leaders will be finishing in the dark

Why aren't Day and Couples on the clock?

Miles behind the grouping front and taken them best part of 5 hours play 17 holes in a 2 ball!!!?

Slow play at club level is mostly caused by 2 things....

Lost balls
Walking slowly between shots

One you can't really help and has to be expected, the other... well just WALK FASTER!!

At pro level there's really no excuse. If you time the first group out then the next etc, there should be no knock on effect back down the field without visibly being able to see who is responsible. Problem is identifying which of the players in the group is the slow one...

Generally I think Mickelson is to blame for the most faffing about. They need to do something about all the chat on the tee box!!

Feel really sorry for the 14yr old but if he was noticably slower than the rest then he deserves it. SOMETHING had to cause the field to back-up as Tiger/Donald waited 30 minutes on one tee box!! But for a 14yr old I have the utmost respect for the way he handled himself... I'd have been blubbing and calling for mummy! :mmm:

I agree with everything above.

But one cause of slow club play has been missed - the actual number of shots played. I'm afraid there is often not much to be gained by walking quickly to a ball that is only a short way forward of where it was last played..

And there is some time, though surprisingly little, to be gained by less faffing about on the green.
