Throwing clubs

Throwing clubs is petulant and should not be done,of course its all built out of frustration.
I also believe that comes down to mental toughness and the ability to put bad shots out of your mind quickly.
A club thrower is usually a beaten golfer, imo

I agree. If I'm playing with someone who's got to the stage of club-throwing, a 2 shot penalty is probably not going to harm their almost-certainly-bad score.

Like I said, not throw one in years, until today..... :o

I may have created an embarrassing record yesterday by throwing, (not over violently) a club after my 2nd shot yesterday!!!! :o

Following the Forums numerous threads and advice on good course management, rather than take on the 200 yds left of our opening hole with OOB very close all the way down the right hand side, I pulled my 7 iron out to lay up to a comfortable 50 yds, leaving my ¾ sand wedge shot. ;)
You guessed, almost straight push OOB, reaction as above. :(
Next ball in play......it happens again!!!!!
No club throwing this time just resignation. Made the green in 7.....3 putted!!!

Our first hole has the reputation of a card wrecker so not for the first time I did put the situation behind me.....finished with 47 for that nine, self stableford mental adjustment to 43, so move on.
Would have broken 90 which I had reset as my goal if a mini tornado hadn’t hit us on the par 5, 14th, I won’t bore you with this one, but one bad hole a side can make a score card look a bit embarrassing.
 :(

Like a recovering alcohloic I'll never be cured but I'm still on the club throwing wagon. I was petulant borne out of frustration but it isn't big and it isn't clever. As for a 2 shot penalty, I don't think so especially at club level. Maybe for the pro game, similar to tennis and racket abuse as it is these guys that make or break the image of the game. 2 shots for swearing though - no chance. I think every golfer down the years has cussed at some point over a bad shot. Most top pros are media savvy enough to know there are mikes all around and the tours do fine them if they transgress. That's good enough for me

I cussed a bit today after one particular bad shot. I didn't feel great about it, but it was nothing compared to the next guy on the tee who hit the ball at 40 degrees right straight into the woods. :o

I love to see the tossers, toss. All it does is make me laugh out very loud......LOVL
How could we police/inforce it????? Well same as you would inforce someone touching the sand in bunkers or having a double hit. Just say Lovely throw, but that is now a double you just had. I think if it was a 2 shot penalty, it was soon be a thing of the past.

So it doesn't bother you but you want to add in a penalty for it????
:D :D :D

Me thinks your trying and failing to convince yourself!

I gave a 2 finger salute to the hole today after lipping a putt, my mate laughed.

Have never hurled a club as wouldnt want to damage them although I am prone to swearing quietly at myself. A friend has been known to throw back at his bag but never on the playing surface/tee etc.

We have a system of fines in our Saturday group which includes swearing, ground bashing and petulance at 50 p a pop. Playing partners are the adjudicators.

We had a great night out on last year's fines.

I cant help laughing if somebody ever throws their clubs. I could make an exception if they were under the age of 12 but if anyone above that age cannot control their temper then I'm not sure golf is the game for them.

To see a grown adult throwing a club is fantastic. God only knows how they would cope with serious issues.

just think of that poor defenceless club getting helicoptered down the fairway! Haha unreal!

I find peer pressure (of lack of) is a major influence here. Although not a club thrower, I have been known to utter some swear words, quite vehemently! Knocking it around the local muni with mates, no peer pressure as such, a bad shot can cause me to get badly steamed up. Having just joined a proper golf club, and not wanting to acquire the wrong kind of reputation, I find that I can bite back my anger after a poor shot. Even more interesting, I am learning that keeping a lid on the anger allows a better score at the end.
Maybe I'm just growing up!

I have been known to chuck the odd club. Usually a wedge as it has the best balance for the launching action.

I also periodically thump tees after a bad drive or on occasion, give the fairway a whack after a bad iron.

My language can be rather vivid after a wayward blow as well.

These outbursts are very infrequent, highly therapeutic and not detrimental to the course or my playing partners either.

I would say that I am fairly typical of the golfing partners I have had over the years.

The posts on this thread that mention penalties for this or take the moral high ground about what a disgace this is are in my view, ridiculously over the top.

In sport, you need to vent your spleen from time to time and a golf course is a sporting arena of sorts. I would not use bad language if I was within earshot of a lady or a junior, nor anywhere near the clubhouse. I would be much more restrained in a competition too. However, in a game with mates, a bit of golf rage is fine with me as long as the course is not disfigured and no-one is monumentally upset by your actions. NB - I would not particularly like to play with anyone who would be put off in this way either.

I find it worse when someone hits a poor shot and goes into a monumental decline and mopes around for the next three holes!

Only guilty of one of those normally, but on current evidence it would be costing me between a fiver and a tenner a round on swearing alone lol

Hi, my names oddsocks and im a tosser.

Not a club thrower by any means but have been known to toss a wedge back to the bag in disgust after a fluffed or thin chip. If i ever use colourful language and the group is made up of mature gentleman/women im the first to apologise for it.

I was out last week with the captain when he bladed a 9 iron through our 16th from about 100 yards away and in a rage he tossed the club about 20 ft, what was funny is it was completely the wrong direction from he's bag. he looked up and instantly apologised as he was having a nightmare, we just laughed and made some patronising noises """oooooooooo ark at her....."""" which seems to lighten the mood.

I think a club toss back to the bag is one thing, but a full on helicopter is another. The thing is at which point do you decide that it was an intended helicopter and not a toss that missed the bag. there are enough rules in golf that people dont know as it is. Do we honestly need more.

Better than sulking ...

There's something quite refreshing about a bit of serious cussing combined with the odd toss ... certainly when compared to a couple of bad holes followed by morose, self-pitying silence for the rest of the round!

Real men toss!
