For goodness sake don't three putt the first green, you'll never recover. And on approach shot don't let the thought of a shank enter your conscious thoughts.
Apart from those two warnings, enjoy yourself.
Our club champs is limited to 7 handicap and under.
I am always staggered that this is not the case elsewhere.
We have fifteen odd playing off two or less. One of them will win it.
Handicap champion? What's the point? You are either club champion, or not. Who gives a monkeys about a 20 odd handicapper mincing about the club house calling himself the champ? Doesn't wash. There is one club champ, and he shot the lowest gross. End of.

For us mortals it gives us a chance to play the course at it's toughest. Having a handicap prize means we get the chance to play under a little perceived pressure in a two day event - something we'd never get otherwise in strokeplay.
I was in the top few last year and it was nice to know that every shot was more important than usual.
It's not hurting the better players, as they've long finished by the time us hackers shamble back to the clubhouse, but it makes for a better atmosphere around the club.
About 90 of us followed the 7 hole playoff last year and I think it made for a better experience for both the eventual winner and runner up, as well as those of us who wanted to watch some decent golf played by amateurs on our own course.
It gets everyone who is vaguely serious or better at the club at the same time once a year and that can't be a bad thing.
