The stigma of being caught cheating

It was a daft thing to do - but some of you need to be careful not to fall off your high horse - methinks some doth protest too much !

Good grief what a pious lot, I have a strong suspicion that many of you Saints drive on your own and yet while driving break the Laws of the Road without any thought.

Of course anyone entering a competition , whether official or casual, is duty bound to play honourably and if a rule infringement occurs a punishment fitting the crime should be metered out.

Banning for life from the game or Club strikes me as disproportionate

I really couldn't give a toss if some one cheats; I'll know I didn't and I'll make sure the cheater knows he/she and we will all move on and play again because life's just too short to start trying to manage the moral fibre of everyone other than yourself - Its a bloody sport !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anything more than a DQ

Well, there is a point of view.

I know this, when I stopped a cheater, the guy that won the medal that day was the guy that won the medal, not the guy who thought he won it by cheating. I couldn't give a toss if someone cheats either.....WELL, as long as it's not on my watch.

I have been playing golf for eighteen months, mostly in comps and roll ups for small cash prizes. In that time, I have seen a player with a lost ball drop another, so that another player could find it. I told him to pick it up, which he did. I have seen players improve their lie too often to keep count. When I mentioned this, I was told not to make a fuss. I don't believe that my club is unusual, as I have competed in other sports and seen cheating take place. It is simply the way that some people behave.

Wow, this cheating lark is more widespread and seems more consistent and common than I could have thought, is there any kind of pattern, age, term of service, area etc?

This has to be in line for the "I can't believe he wrote that" award at our annual awards ceremony!

If you want to know all the ways it is possible to cheat at golf, watch the video of "Bad Golf Made Easier" with Leslie Nielsen. This includes 'the hand wedge' for getting out of bunkers, as mentioned by the original poster. At least then you know what to look for. It is also very funny! :)

That's what I was wondering. Is this a relatively recent thing; is it mostly from folks newer to the game - who maybe don't really have a knowledge or feel for the game and the importance of honesty? - who maybe don't understand or accept 'rub of the green' and that golf isn't meant to be fair. I can also imagine a thinking that says - I've paid a lot to play - I'm not having a good score messed up by some stupid rule or bad lie. Is it likely to happen more if there are large bets in place? I dunno. I am a bit surprised that some see cheating going on a regular and almost casual basis. I honestly can't think off top of my head of any blatant cheating I've seen.

I suppose that how much cheating that you see depends on how many different golfers you play with. FWIW, every occasion that I recall was a highish handicap golfer who had played for ten or more years.

It can also be very good golfers who are naturally competitive and will try to gain any advantages they can. There have been several well documented instances of tour pros being banned for deliberate cheating.

I've never encountered blatant cheating. I do one of one young player at my old club who got banned for a certain amount of time.

He was attempting to get to cat 1 to qualify for a university scholarship or something. Idiot.

We had one of them. Repetitively - think we asked him to leave.

Indeed, I know of a 3-handicapper who regularly employs a 'leather wedge' to improve his lie in the rough, or to move away from an obstruction.

Was told today the name of the bloke in question and looked up he H/C and he plays off 5.2 which begs the question why on earth would he risk all when quite clearly he is a good player and probably would have got up and down from where he was, was also told unofficially he is still suspended but won't be coming back.
