The stigma of being caught cheating

As you are from Bristol and The Players had their 36 hole club champs yesterday, please tell me this happened there?

This guy is done. he'll be found out wherever he goes.

I would be at least pleased to see a club take some decisive action. I suspect that there are not many of us on here who are members of a club where there is not rumour and innnuendo flying around about one or two members and yet nothing gets done. Be it the 4 ball who wins the am-am comps every year or the individual who is supected of improving his lie etc, the rumours abound but little ever seems to get done. I stopped playing with one person who I suspected of improving his lie but never saw enough to make a report as he was always careful to put his trolley in the way or wait until I was not looking and I would catch a glimpse of movement when I looked back. However deep in the rough he was though, he could always get a decent club to the ball. Anyway, I stopped playing with him and was asked by a member of the competitions committee why. I blamed the bloke's temper as it was renowned to which it was replied 'that is not the worst of the rumours that I have heard about him'. Clearly others have said things but nothing is done so hopefully the club will stand up on this matter.

I was at my local today and heard a person doing a 36 hole medal was caught cheating yesterday, basically he was in a bunker and thought his pp's were not looking so picked the ball up and thew it onto the green, what he didn't know that a group playing on an adjacent green were watching him who got straight on the phone and rang the clubhouse.
Why on earth would someone want to do that risking friends and respect from fellow members, I am an honest person and would be devastated if somebody thought I cheated playing golf .
AFAIK he was suspended pending meetings, Now I think he should be banned from all future comps but should he be banned from the club.

At the end of the day is it worth cheating, that would be a no from me.

Golf has that culture of being honest. declaring penalty's on yourself because that's how it is, Golf and snooker are the only 2 sports that do this to such a high level.
So when people are caught so blatantly cheating like that, well it looks really really bad.
Banned from all comps well that's a must, Banned from the club I dont know about that but if he does end up banned from the club well only one person to blame.

A serious warning - no more - no bans from comps or chucking out of the club. Unless he has a history. It's cheating at golf - nobody died. Let's not make this out to be more than it actually is with potential serious embarrassment and impact for him and even his family outside of the club and even outside of local golf. First serious offence - give benefit of doubt on side of it being a one off and never again aberration.

Got to agree.

If I cheated, and was caught, the impact of being banned would be huge. Wonder how many amateur footballers have won penalties through diving, scored goals with their hands etc. to win cups.

We've had one guy caught cheating and one caught for the second time, this was in the last couple of years, neither now play at the club and the first guy moved clubs in the same county and I'm sure that he's watched like a hawk. One other player has often been suspected but either hasn't been caught or dobbed in officially although he's widely regarded as a cheat and he's won many comps!

Not really the same tho there are match officials to spot that . ok sometimes they get it wrong , in golf you are your own ref most of the time

Which is why in sports that officials are blamed for missing the action, rather than the player having the finger pointed at him/her.

Cheating is a part of all sports. It shouldn't be accepted, but it's difficult not to point out the extreme spectrum of consequences across different sports.

Bit of a sad case really as the only person he's really cheated is himself, cheated himself out of any respect from the other club members, possibly cheated himself out of future comps and possibly cheated himself out of a future at the club !...

I very often go around the course on my own and more often than not I'll keep track of my score therefore I could quite easily scrub out the odd bad shot or two so that my score card looks better but what would be the point in that as the only person I'd be fooling was me so pointless really, if I have a poor round then so be it !...

Ban him, black ball him, call it what you like, it was deliberate, it was premeditated, he cheated and got caught, nobody will want to play with him again anyway now so he should leave the club or be thrown out, none of this lefty softly softly crap, that's what's wrong with this whole country in far too many area's of life whether professional or pastime, too many tree huggers, and I don't care if "its just a game of golf", its dishonest and golf is built on being self-governed to a degree and being honest, he has failed, end of.....throw him to the ground Centurion..

Don't know why you think 'leftie' - implies that 'righties' can't hold same considerations for others - and I wouldn't dare suggest such a thing as 'righties' really DO care for others and are able to put into perspective what has actually been done.

"Ban him, black ball him, call it what you like, it was deliberate, it was premeditated, he cheated and got caught, nobody will want to play with him again anyway now so he should leave the club or be thrown out".
Agree with this, imagine playing with him, how can you constantly watch him and concentrate your own game.

But it's just a game...

Also I do wish people would get their political insults right and be able to distinguish between labour, liberals and the greens. We are different you know;)

What a fool. I fear he's labelled now whether the club expel him or not and I'd doubt many (if any) would want to play with him in a competition again. I have no doubt the jungle drums have already started beating and he'll find it hard to a warm welcome anywhere local.

Not quite the same if he then walked up to one of his PP's and said "I've NR'd mate, I couldn't get out of that bunker so picked up and threw it on the green!"

If however he carried on and put a card in then he's a cheaty-pants who deserves what he gets.

Agree with this.

I'm interested by these assertions that it goes on at every club and there are always people under suspicion. I've never heard anything at my club. Does that mean it's me...?
