The Range, and them stupid tees

Went the range last night to sort out the pull in my drive.

Was still warm and dry so I was able to tee it up off the grass rather than off the mats and the bloomin rubber door wedges!

Had a fantastic 50 balls, started with the 7 and was good to be able to take some turf rather than bounce off the mat.

Moved onto the driver when I was warmed up and I quickly sorted the pull. Hit 80% of them straight(ish) so was happy, and the range balls where landing about 230-240 and rolling through the back fence which is at 250 so that made me happy too.

Was a young lad next to me, 15 years old using a 9 degree nike driver with stiff shaft, boshing them over the back fence like tiger would. Had a lovely set of srixon blades in a very large tour bag. Played off 9 apperently, the kid was just creaming his balls whilst having a laugh with a gent next to him. When he finished the gent come over to me and said he's good isn't he and then started to watch me hit my driver.

He told me i had a good solid swing which i was pleased about and i carried on knocking them upto the back fence with his verdicts in tow.

After i finished my balls i went back into the range for another basket with the intent to practice some chip and runs, pitch shots etc. As I got stuck in I wondered if I could exercise my demons and use the driver off a range tee.
...Our servey sez eeh eeeh!

What is it with those tees? Is it just me or does anyone else find them too low and too difficult to get through?

Also, who else is using the grass at their range if they have any?

I don't have any problems with range tees just hitting irons off the mats, bounce problems as you mentioned. My only problem with my driver apart from distance and direction, normally hitting about 220 yards with a draw although on the range i get a slice. Out of interest what size tee's do you all tee off with the driver i use 70mm tees but i think they are a little short. I tend to want to keep the ball up high and on a wet day i need to push the tee in to the ground more for stability.

I am not entirely sure what size tee i use, its long though, Its white wooden with a blue band around the middle. If i push it down so the blue band lines up with the ground, thats the righ height and it finds the sweet spot every time.

At the range the grey tees are the largest and it only sits the ball in the sweet spot at address. This is too low for me. When i tee the ball up with my tees the equater af the ball sits at the top of my driver!

Now that the ground is very firm i am snapping a hell of a lot of tee's. I have started pushing the tee in and then wriggling it loose a bit. That way, most of the time it pops back out with out snapping.

There are several different tee heights at my range. They come in various colours according to height. You should ask the people in charge about this.
I like the blue one which is the right height for my driver.

They have them all there, Orange, is smallest, Blue is Medium Grey is largest. Even my pro told me the grey tee is not high enough for the drivers!

We normally jam propper tee's in somehow for a lesson, now its nice though the grass can be used!

I take my own tees.....and even lend them out sometimes. It's always struck me as rather odd that ranges tend to have just massive driver tees.....

i totally agree about the range tees, you would think with the money these places take they would be able to afford to provide the right equipment.as the the mats my local muni range has mats with a little patch filled with gel it is supposed to mimmick the taking of a divot and is actually quite nice to hit the ball off, though not as good as the real thing, anyone else have experience of these mats.

They are proper range tees.....you can buy sets on the 'net or DG sell them. Only snag is cutting them down (to make the smallest), it's an odd material.....I used a diamond-sharp Stanley knife and still had trouble.
Such a bonus....mine are basically the sizes of the plastic castle tees.

A range I know has a little purpose designed slot that you can push your tee into on their mats, although the trouble is it is difficult to get your tee out if you break it. It is a much better idea than those thick rubber tees. To be honest thoguh since I joined my club with a grass range I rarely go to the indoor range anyway. If its raining I just don't bother.

i been using to grass tees at my local range its so much nicer hitting off the real stuff esp with the wedge shots, i also find the rubber tees either to low or too high so i got one of the high ones and cut it down to the correct size for me and take it with me everytime i go maybe that could help

Good thinking....you and me both....

There's a range at my local (40 miles!) Direct Golf. It has inbuilt grassy bits....I really like these, great for wedge practice, there's so much more "give" for the club through impact!!

I once played in an open fourball comp, and one of the guys had put a spike in the bottom of a rubber range tee and used for the full round, consistantly hitting his drives around 280yds.

I always find i hit the ball better on the course than the range, so much so, that now I actually wonder if the range is a good idea.

I always come away feeling like I havn't really acheived anythin, even after a good session.

From now on its grass practice only for me!

i just been playing about with rubber tees this morning,i just cut down the smallest tee so it sits flush with the mat then filled it with mastic then i put a cross shape in it with a stanley blade for wooden tees to slip in seems to do the job for the time being anyway
