The Oscars 2022.

Fulsome apology from WS (to the Academy, audience and viewers) for his behaviour and acknowledgement that it was wrong and that there are no excuses for his acting as he did. Some no doubt disagree with him.

Do you think that , privately, he has told his wife that he is sorry for what he did.?
I suspect she is just a little bit more proud of him for his actions that night.

Just on a slight alternate view to this. Alopecia is hard for anyone, but especially so for women. His wife is going to appear at one of the biggest events in the calendar and may have been agonising and self-conscious about how she looked. He may have spent time telling her it didn't matter, how beautiful she looked, and then someone comes along and says something like this. He could have just lost it at that time.
Also, we don't know if there is past history or bad blood between the two.
I'm not saying any of this is true, but just another slant on it.
Either way, for Rock to mock someone with this condition is 100% not on.
For me, the best thing to have done was to walk up to Rock, and ask him to repeat it directly to his wife, once again, on TV. Publicly humiliate and embarrass him. That way, he would have had the higher ground and Rock would have had to apologise.

He actually apologised almost immediately afterwards, during his acceptance speech. He simply ommitted Chris Rock from the apology. He then directly apologised to Chris in his latest statement.

It is pretty much what I have said elsewhere.

Firstly, there is a past history, as Rock made fun of Jada a few years ago at the Oscars and continues to use her as a punchline on social media.

However, we've no idea what it was like for her and her condition. Especially as looks play an important role in her career, and she will always have millions of eyes upon her. She could have suffered huge anxiety and even bouts of depression. It might have been a big family effort to build up her confidence again, only to see her mocked in front of the world. Maybe he tried to laugh it off like every other time, but then seeing the look on her face probably brought all that pain and emotion to the top of his head. It must have done, as it wasn't a rational reaction. It was a sudden red mist from a guy who, up to that point, was probably as highly admired as someone like Tom Hanks.

I bet many good men may react the same if their wife mocked, many good women react the same way if their husband or kids mocked. Unfortunate human reaction, especially for him as it was in front of the entire world.

I don't like to judge someone based on probably their darkest 60 seconds in their life. I'd hate everyone if I only saw their worst moment. Better to judge someone on how they behave over the long term, and how they act after they make a mistake.

Has slapping him made the point that he wanted to make?

Only Will Smith knows the answer, but in my view, the point to be made was that there should be no place for cruel jokes of the type rock made. Given the subsequent press coverage, that point has most definitely not been made.

Don't americans bang on about free speach? That's until someone a says something they don't like!! Chris rock has come off as the victim. It would have made a bigger statement if Will and Jada just stood up and simply walked out. That would have been the end of Chris Rock

They do, and Chris Rock wasn't arrested for what he said. I doubt anyone sees him as a victim though. Even most of the Will Smith haters have also agreed the joke was pretty rubbish, so Rock has come out looking like a bit of an idiot as well.

A month or two ago we had a long discussion on this forum re Jimmy Carr and some of his topics. For some it just seems any topic is ok to laugh at. It seems more and more comedians find having a laugh at someone’s expense there route to ”entertain” and stardom. It dont Cut the mustard for me. The biggest thing I find about all of this is the hypocrisy of it all. Over the last couple of years we have had X number of campaigns regards Respect for women, stress, anxiety and support. Remeber Caroline Flack. There’s a fine line and I think it’s been crossed a couple of times.

I don't see anyone launching an investigation into Chris's conduct during the actors. In fact, Chris rock has hardly been mentioned. It was a bad joke but so what!!

It wasn't just a bad" joke", it was cruel behaviour by someone with little talent to be genuinely funny. (And my definition of genuinely funny is the ability to make people laugh without being cruel to someone.)
It happens all to frequently these days, as Tash has alluded to.
Putting a label on behaviour as a "joke" does not excuse it - though some on here seem to think it does.
Ok, so I'm old, and so , old fashioned, I suppose. But there's a harshness and a callousness now in this Country, and that dismays me, and ,frankly, makes me somewhat ashamed .

You can call it what ever you like. I can't disagree with what you've said. The answer was simple. You don't like it leave!!! Imagine the headlines the next day "WILL WALKS OUT OF OSCARS BEFORE GETTING BEST ACTOR AWARD" That would have spoken volumes. The fact Will laughed at first also done him no favours.
Said comedians will soon change their tone when they realise they're not being rebooked for events.
I personally didn't like the joke but you can't say what a comedian can and can't say because there will always be someone out there that finds offence with any joke

That's what I mean, freedom of speech allows him to make that joke. But there are other consequences. If it is a bad joke and goes down like a lead balloon, he'd still be considered an idiot by the masses, not a victim.

I guess he is another comedian who treads on that fine line. Fair enough, if done well. But such comedians really need to do their research, and know their audience for it to work. It appears he didn't realise Jada had a medical condition, thus the complete backfire of the joke. Not just Smith's reaction, but the general public reaction.

You are saying that assuming Will Smith planned his reaction. He clearly didn't. It was an irrational reaction.

Furthermore, had he walked out then there would be no doubt thousands would slag him off anyway for not being able to take a silly joke. Just like anyone else you ever see walk off an interview or panel show because they can't take a joke.
