I think it was an odd comment by Nantz. As a commentator you do your research and to state you haven't at this stage, odd. If you are that involved in golf, wouldn't you be looking at all possible contenders and knowing how they are playing?

I’d be very disappointed in a commentary that didn’t include history, current form guide and what club they’re playing from xx yards. I don’t need a description of the shot itself, I can see that as it’s played.

Surprised that someone like Nantz would be so unprofessional.

I agree with you Brian but I wonder for all these commentators do they have a runner that provides all the stats they need and they just revise it the day before?

I would say knowledge of the course is probably the most important stat as they try and describe the shot before it’s played and if it is a fairly easy or more difficult shot.

I would imagine Augusta must be the easiest course to do this as it’s obviously played there every year and they must know it extremely well, as most of us do just from watching over the years.

I suspect it was a not so hidden dig at LIV and BDC playing there, ie it is not a relevant tour. That's a cheap shot, he should be above this.

As a “host and commentator” does he really need to watch all the tours , I suspect he prob doesn’t watch all the PGAT events or ET events and certainly won’t be watching the events in the Far east or any of the Am’s

Personally I've never heard of Jim Nantz and couldn't give a flying one if he's watched Bryson play or not. I haven't watched him either, apart from that one wood he hit out of a mudbath the other week, but I still know he's a very good golfer.

Nantz isn’t even really a commentator, he’s a broadcaster. You also don’t need to watch a player to know what form is like, a quick glance shows Bryson has 2 wins in a row, his shots gained stats etc are readily available and his distances are largely irrelevant as they’re readily available to broadcasters again through stats and the on course commentators following the groups feed that info back to studios and 9/10 it’s them who tells the viewer.
