The Halfway Hut - An oasis or an unwelcome distraction?

Would common sense not dictate that you should tee off before the next group finish the previous hole, and not wait for them to finish?

Surely would depend on where the group is in front or if the group behind also goes to the halfway hut for a bite to eat etc - all about judging the situation at the time.
We spend many hours on here arguing about slow play, yet just because it's the halfway hut, it seems like it's OK to willingly hold up the rest of the field while you have a sit down? Strange

When did anyone suggest its ok to hold up the rest of the field whilst people have a sit down - again its judging the pace of the play and the situation and how every group is acting on the day .

When it comes to halfway huts it appears that most stop grab something - spend a minute of so then move on.

Phil, I'm actually confused as to why you seem to want to argue with me? All I have said is that you don't need to stop and sit down at the halfway hut, buy a drink, buy some food and crack on when it is clear ahead of you. You seem to be agreeing with me that the situation I revived this thread with in post #66 was an unacceptable situation?

Im not arguing with anyone - just putting my point that not everything is black and white not every situation can be judged the same

Many people whilst playing the game like to stop grab a bit to eat have a cuppa tot up the scorecards then move on - some have an extra couple mins just to sit down and have a quick cuppa - whenever i have played whenever a halfway hut is open the majority do this so the whole field doesnt get held up throughout the round because of the halfway hut.

Did they hold you up on the front nine ? Did they hold you up on the back 9 ? You all appeared to go into the hut also so cant really see the issue.

Whenever i have played Blackmoor the same happens every time at the halfway hut - the group comes out of the hut as you are finishing the 9th - gives people time to get something themselves from the hut - quick reflection off the back nine and away they go again - on speaking to Rich it appears thats what happens every time.

Of all the problems being faced by golf - being social in the halfway hut is prob right at the bottom.

I always found that the halfway hut helped the pace of play. At Stoke it spread the groups out and made for a far smoother last 8 holes. Just about everyone stopped or simply asked the group in the hut if they minded them going through. Never any hassle abd provided a great revenue source for the club

Yep sounds about spot on from my expirence - have been let through at times , have let through quicker groups at times. Gives groups time to move on whilst other groups grab a cuppa etc

we weren't being held up on the front nine, and we weren't holding anyone up, the was enough of a gap between the groups to keep things moving along but not enough such that anyone had lost ground.

I finished the 9th hole went into the hut where the other group were still sat, bought drinks for my group, left the hut and none of the first group had tee'd off. We then had to explain the sudden hold up to the group behind us, and I suspect them to the group behind them. That situation shouldn't have happened as the 1st group should have been away before we'd finished the 9th.

Its not really a drastic situation for a group to have to wait an extra couple mins at the halfway stage.
So overall i expect the game prob took as long as normal bar maybe a couple of mins ?

What you describe happens to us every weekend when we go out in the first 3 groups but we know it happens because we also stop - as do all the groups behind us

Its part of the round.

At Dundonald Links you can phone from the 9th tee and collect it from the clubhouse on the walk from 9th green to 10th tee. It seems to work ok there for visitors when I caddied there. No groups waited to eat/drink but kept their place on the course with their snack. Not sure how used it is during medals??? So not a hut as such but you can sit at the clubhouse and eat/drink if you wish.

Im happy to have a half way hut even though it has messed up a couple of rounds.
But there has to be an etiquette as well.
If the whole course is expected to use it,it has to be well oiled.
Sitting around whilst the group in front has gone out of sight and holding
up the group behind is not on because it will have a knock on effect.

Having a sit down with a cuppa half way through a round is a bit of a strange concept to me. I thought halfway houses were there to stock up with snacks and drinks for the back 9 (if required) and quickly move on.

You're like a politician Phil, you never actually answer a question.

yes we were held up on the back nine, on the 10th tee, obviously, and on the 11th, 14th and 17th.

Answer me this if you can just so I know where you stand. Do you think the situation that happened to me in the comp yesterday is acceptable behaviour from the 1st group?

Not a distraction at all for me. In fact, the complete opposite. The chance to take onboard a bit of fuel, and to relax for 10 mins could(should) be seen as a positive, and allow you to really kick on for the second nine.

The 'in the zone' stuff and the need to stay there suggests some need to learn to switch on and off at the right times. Trying to stay constantly in the zone is tiring and isn't good for your game, but taking on fuel and relaxing is. Use the time wisely and it will benefit your game, not hinder it.

So it appears you got held up on one tee based on the halfway hut then after that normal golf.

Its behaviour that doesnt bother me in the slightest - so i would accept it and deal with it and i know it happens on our course with people at the halfway hut and seen it happen at Blackmoor on the society day. Didnt bother me in the slightest as allowed me to relax and take a cuppa and a roll and then crack on.

Whilst slow play isnt something i am in favour off - a 5 min break at the halfway hut is something that i dont see an issue with.

So you'll rant and rave about folk not calling you through while looking for a ball, but quite happy to accept a delay of around 10 mins (it's never 5 mins!!!) at half-way! Seems just a tad iffy logic! If you were really serious about reducing the time for a round - instead of simply whingeing about it! - the first thing that would be done would be to eliminate the half-way house!

Depends how you view it. I see the half way hut stop as part of the social element of golf, almost as important as the post round drink. Slow play is incosiderate, having a coffee and a bacon roll is being sociable. I think they are a massive plus to clubs that have them and I miss the lack of one at my current club. If the club wants to close it for certain comps etc, as my old club did, then so be it but if it is open then its use should be encouraged as much as other catering facilities

Slow play is incosiderate

Not necessarily! Slow play is .... slow play. I know several groups who play slowly, but are very considerate and encourage folk to play through!

Inconsiderate play is, however, inconsiderate!

And I'm not against the idea of a half-way house either - for social and/or 'recovery' reasons. I was simply pointing out LPP's iffy logic!

Summed up perfectly

I trust these stoppages of 5 or even 10 minutes fall within the [rules], especially as they use the wording that we shouldn't "unduly delay yourself", everyone seems to be just focussing on delaying others!

If a halfway hut was a rule breach I suspect that they would have ceased to exist years ago or be closed for all competition rounds
