The Halfway Hut - An oasis or an unwelcome distraction?

If a halfway hut was a rule breach I suspect that they would have ceased to exist years ago or be closed for all competition rounds

At a previous club their hut was never open on a competition day of any sort, when it was open the competition of the day was then non-qualifying due to, as what was told to me by the HS, a rule breach if you unduly delayed yourself or caused a delay to others!

I suppose if a group in front stopped and had something to eat & drink that took 5-10 minutes but then the following group didn't wish to use the hut, you would then have a delay situation with 2 groups on the 10th tee!

Made the comp non qualfying due to the hut being open ?!? Well thats a first i have heard.

I have never witnessed anyone take more than 5 mins at the halfway hut and seen longer delays on the course.

You could argue that the some delays on the course are a consequence of the game and in some cases an inevitability, where as stopping at the hut isn't!

I wonder what the county would say about making the comps non qualifying when the full course is open - especially when their guidelines suggest making as many comps as possible HC qualifying. I would also be amazed to see anything in the rules about a halfway hut.

Depends how you view it. I see the half way hut stop as part of the social element of golf, almost as important as the post round drink. Slow play is incosiderate, having a coffee and a bacon roll is being sociable. I think they are a massive plus to clubs that have them and I miss the lack of one at my current club. If the club wants to close it for certain comps etc, as my old club did, then so be it but if it is open then its use should be encouraged as much as other catering facilities

Not being ready to play, or choosing not to play, when it is clear for you to do so, and when your delay is going to cause a knock-on delay to the group behind is inconsiderate whether its at the 10th tee or any other tee. Assuming that your actions are OK because everyone behind you wants to stop is equally inconsiderate.

What do you do if all your PP want to stop and have a quick sit down for a couple mins and a bite to eat ?

It hasn't happened yet, my usual PPs don't need to sit down and are generally aware of the basic concept of playing when it's clear to do so. If it did happen, I'd probably suggest that we ought to keep moving as the group behind is approaching. If they don't want to move, and the group behind don't want stop, I'd suggest letting them play through. For me personally it would be frustrating but I'd just have to put up with it wouldn't I?

It just seems strange for someone to have such a strong issue with halfway hut and people being social and having a bite to eat

We play a social game and as GB said having a chat at the halfway hut and relaxing for a couple mins is all part of it for me - some times it may take a little longer if waiting for something or its a nice day etc but it happens and the game still goes on etc

Lots of plus points about the halfway house especially when the club has a good one like Blackmoor does - Woburn is another cracker that i saw the Pros using during qualifying for a quick break and in the Seniors - never seen one cause any issues - maybe because everyone i play with stops at one.

Spot on. We have one and nearly everyone stops for a tee and bacon roll etc. All part of the day. We added a note in the hut stating that you do loose your place if in the hut so peaple behind can go through - most don't but some groups use it as an opportunity to get through slower play in front - but 95% stop at the hut

I have no issue with the hut, I have issue with this strange notion that it is OK to cause delay because of it. I appreciate most people only stop long enough to buy want they want and then consume while they play, but there are some that think its OK to stop and cause delay to those behind - it isn't.

At the end of the day its prob only about 5 mins at the most - if that in regards delay and it will always quicken up with an hole and just will never seen that important in the grand scheme of things - especially when you have such nice people in the hut :D

you've met Katie then :D

I suppose it is all down to what is the norm at the course. At my old club it was normal to stop for 10 minutes abd move on when the next group reached the hut. If people normally buy and walk on then that is what I would do, if most people walk past the hut then the hut will not last long but so be it that is what I will do. The courses I know with a hut have a long established routine when it comes to use of a hut and that is what I do whether I like it or not

halfway huts are fine and handy for coffee on a cold day, but it would be wrong to expect to retain your place on the course if you choose to use it.

I think halfway huts have their place but I'm firmly with Hawkeye on this. I wouldn't want to stop if I was playing well and someone says that "adults will normally go with the majority." Does this now mean I have to now break my round to sit around waiting for the others to have a drink.
