The Halfway Hut - An oasis or an unwelcome distraction?

Ours is, I am assured, very good. Open at week-ends and serves very good "halfway hut" food. A notice requests that, in comps, players should endeavour to ensure that play, as far as possible, is continuous and seems to work pretty well.

Do, or would, I use it : No, never! If I want a meal I would have it before or, more likely, after the round.

Ours is great. Food is same quality as the clubhouse. Bacon baps and sausage baps are superb, and if you are lucky Katie is serving them to you.

I love a good halfway hut and really miss the one at Stoke Rochford. It sat by the 10th Green and made a great sausage and bacon bap. Just about everyone stopped and that rule was that you were ready to play on the 11th tee when the group in front reached the 11th green. What it did was helped spread groups out and made for far better pace of play for the last 8 holes. Never seen it as a distraction or an delay in any way.

I like halfway huts. Time for a chat with your partners and you can usually bump into friends who are a group ahead or behind. Very convivial.

Agree though that being forced to stop is daft and you should be allowed to jump ahead.

Best one I have been to is Sunningdale (awesome pint of Pimms). Woburn Marquis is nice too. And St Georges Hill (champagne with a smile). West Hill is good. Hindhead - nice. Gleneagles - nice.

I don't agree with the Hillside suggestion and have played there twice but do not recall the Halfway Hut - can't be that good. :)

Can be nice in open comps and invitations where it's more of a "Day out" than a regular round but on the whole just slow down the run of the mill comps. Also, they sort of sucker you in to buying something to kill the time waiting for the group in front. Nice business plan!

We have one that sells sausage/bacon rolls, tea/coffee, and soup in the winter.

We don't stop though. Get what you want and eat it while you're walking.

The one at my course is a belter. Hardly use it myself but they do sell the best sausage rolls in the area!

I did laugh a couple of weeks a go one of our members was walking away very pleased with himself as he tucked into a bacon and a sausage roll barm! That's right bacon AND a sausage roll :)

We've got a decent one that is open 7 days a week. Always got hot sausage rolls ,coffees, chocolate etc,etc on hand and phone through orders are available too. Use it most weekends and it's ideally situated off of the back of our 9th before moving onto the 10th tee.

Pretty much all got something halfway here, some are almost fully stocked bars with others that might just be a table with chilled ice tea and giant cookies for you to take

Most have fruit of some sort put out for players to grab

We also have the beer cart scuttling round which you'll see at least three times a round sometimes also handing out chilled water melon or something else depending on whats in season

Doesn't really impact pace if the players know how to use it properly (no more than someone popping to the loo anyway)

Otley GC has a great halfway hut, everything a £1 and just has an honesty box for your money. Grab a coffee or soup/sausage or pork pie (both very good) and off you pop to the next tee. I only play as a guest normally on a sunday when the course is quieter but still busy and never seen a problem.

We have one and generally I think they are a good idea, but in comps they are frustrating. Towards the back of the groups we can end up arriving at the halfway hut and there will be one group on the tee of the 10th and 2 in the halfway hut, effectively forcing a 20-30 delay. They tried to introduce a ruling of only 10 mins max at the hut, but all it takes is one group to be there for 15 and everything starts to back up. It can be annoying.

If im playing a social game im happy to get a coffee and snack.

When we played North Hants in the HFH last year it was a major distraction.
Sitting on 20 points after 8 holes and blobbed the 9th sat there stewing over
the shots I messed up and never got going again after the stop.

So for me it depends on what sort of game im playing comp or social.

A fellow connoiseur, I see.

Hillside's is off to the left as you approach the 9th green, although you have to pass it on the way to the 10 th tee (uphill par 3).

It is quite close to the 10th tee, so maybe they want people to be reasonably quiet and stop, rather than putting some players off, when teeing off, as they are slightly out of sight.

I was very disappointed with the one at Gleneagles.
The roasted quail with wild mushrooms, kale, fondant potatoes and a tarragon and Madeira sauce was lukewarm. Disgusting for £39.95.
I nearly choked on my glass of Mateus.

Is that the lovely young lady from last year :D

We have a hut - coffee , soup , bacon and sausage baps etc with club shop near for cold drinks. Not sure why it would take ten mins to serve three people or have any effect on the round

I love them. I think every course should have something after 9 holes and a stop should be compulsary! They work really well in South Africa and the whole stop forms part of the round. people here go on about interrupting their 'flow' but honestly, most of you choppers need the break to get your head back in the game!!:)
