Any team that has the lead generally slow the game down.
If I was the Brighton manager I would be questioning the officials rather than the opposition if I was unhappy with it
He was questioning the officials all game.
Arsenal were terrible with their tactics of taking their time over everything.
I thought Brighton did really well by not giving them time to settle on the ball.
Arsenal could only score a lucky deflected goal, even Saka couldnt believe it!

If Arsenal are supposed to be the best team in the premiership give me Liverpools title winning season, much more exciting and how football should be played.

Brighton had more possession, more shots on goal, maybe they need to look closer to home.

So

We both grew up watching football late 60’s and all through the 70’s. I honestly don’t recall time wasting back then. Teams were trying to attack for the whole game. When do you think this elaborate and structured approach to time wasting kicked in.
I think you are forgetting the pass back to the keeper, keeper picks it up. As clear as you can get for time wasting, thankfully consigned to the history books.

Things happened, our memory just forgets them over time

Like almost every other sport, the ref’s watch needs to be linked to the scoreboard. They just stop the clock when there is time wasting. At the end of game you know exactly how many seconds are left. This heightens tension at the end of the game rather than guessing when it might end. Everything is clear, open and obvious.
Most other sports simply couldn’t function without a clock that showed real game time remaining. Baffles me why on earth football can’t make this simple move.
It won’t stop all time wasting but players know when the clock is stopped ‘it’s only their time they are wasting’.

I think we’d both be guilty of looking through rose tinted glasses, apart from going the match we really only had MOTD and the likes of Grandstand, games weren’t analysed or covered to the extent they aren’t now.

Over the years we’ve seen teams accussed of “killing games off” by keeping possession or being accussed of not knowing how to fo that when blowing leads.

Arsenal accussed of being boring in the 90’s, City slated for making the PL a one horse race for years.

I just don’t believe we are seeing anything new.

Fans only moan when their teams lose, daft, but totally understandable tactic was N’Castle slowing the game down when they went 2-1 up last night, granted it was only for a few minutes, but the Mags loved it.

Brighton missed a couple of easy chances last night and the Arsenal goal went through the keepers legs add in the 60% possession and it was all Arsenal’s fault.🤷‍♂️

You mean like Rugby that plays on after full time until the ball goes dead.🙄

62 this month

Nah, you’ve been peddling that “62” for years… ;) :ROFLMAO:

On another note, the game has evolved. Better pitches, who can forget the Baseball ground, better fitness, better coaching etc.

My biggest gripe is the wrestling. The holding in Arsenal’s game was on a level I’ve not seen before. I don’t care if it’s 6 of one, half a dozen of another get the cards out.

I like the idea of a visible time clock, that continually counts until the ref indicates he is stopping it for an injury, sub, goal celebration or time-wasting. They already put their arm in the air and point at the watch when they are indicating that the clock has been stopped, so it just needs to be visible to players and fans. Then we have none of this controversy about a referee adding on much more time than he originally indicated, or teams time-wasting and the referee allegedly not taking it into account.

I also like the idea that, when the clock hits 45 or 90, play continues until the ball is out of play. I think that would be quite entertaining when a team needs a goal and is in possession, and exciting for defending fans as they are looking to turn over play and boot the ball out of play. If defending team commits a foul, attacking team are allowed to take the free kick.
