Presumably he can be done for assault, if the evidence is deemed clear? Didn't Duncan Ferguson go to prison for something he did on the football field?

Absolutely he could, and he should. It’s entirely possible to commit an assault during a match if your actions are not part of the game, and that quite clearly isn’t.

I’ve known it happen a few times.

I can’t remember that lol, but there was a video going around recently of a player who elbowed someone off the ball, sure he’s been arrested.
