Who would you have liked to come in ?

Edwards did a good job at Luton to sneak them into the Prem and was ok in the Prem but can understand why it would feel and underwhelming appointment
It feels like we're planning for next year, but I think there's a big possibility of a double dip...again. Nobody can save this squad in all fairness, damage has already been done in the summer. Nobody decent would've wanted it, but I'd have liked Ten Hag if he fancied it as reported, Ajax, Utd and Wolves on his CV, plenty of European Cups between us.

Worth a read, if you either support United or are otherwise obsessed with them 😉
450 redundancies is mental.
It’s never good to see people lose their jobs, and UTD were hammered for it at the time.
But if you can lay 450 people off & still operate the same, then you were obviously over staffed.

Two good goals but precious little else.
They've still not played a top tier team, when they do they'll have to be a lot tighter and more tactically disciplined.

Sadly, it's Groundhog Day. Breeze through qualifying largely untested.

It’s akin to Celtic, and Rangers in their pomp, being so much better than those they play week in, week out. Then in Europe they get found out by stronger opposition. Next summer, unless there are big improvements, England will come unstuck as soon as we play a competent side. Same as we always do.

That’s the seeding. England, just like most of the top teams, face no one of note till the finals.

I hope they arrange some decent friendlies before the finals.

Is there a stand out international team now?
Personally I think we’re as good as anyone.
Worrying thing for me is who’s going to replace Kane in a few years?
Or if Kane gets injured.

Any tournament at the moment is quite open, imo. I agree, there is not an outstanding team right now. Some good ones, but none that make you go wow. England have as good a chance as any team, they really do.

In terms of Kane, we don't know who is coming through 🤷. Hopefully there is someone out there we aren't aware of yet. Maybe Toney will come back to the PL and be an option?

there is no stand out team at the moment the world over it’s probably the tightest it’s ever been. Our chances will never be better based on current world football.

Kanes replacement in future of If he gets injured it’s slim picking at the moment, the only like for like(ish) replacement is Toney, but is he playing real competitive football to be up to that level now ! I believe Delap is likely most obvious future choice if he can get his game up a little.

But during the tournament if it happened could well be Bellingham as a false 9. He has the stature and size of a Kane, decent in the air and can finish. It wouldnt be ideal but it’s an option

McManaman one of the highest paid players in the world at the time

The gap to the Prem wages is interesting and what it is potentially now
The Man Utd wages are very interesting! Sir Alex ran a tight ship. I saw a quote from Scholes recently where he said he idly pointed out what he could be earning if he went to Inter, who were interested. Sir Alex looked at his contract and said "no - what you're earning is fair". Scholes then said he regretted bringing it up! Amazing that United and Sir Alex had that draw in those days that he/they knew players wanted to play for them. (Of course, Becks is one who did go for the bigger wages before long.)

Back in the days of where there was no DoF etc and the Manager had overall control with the owners etc there “to just sign the cheques” as Shanks used to say

Look at the difference between Del Piero and Zidane. Same club, similar ages.
Zidane then moved to Real Madrid for a world record fee.

Goal-scorers' wages? Valuable players' fees?

Toney is only 3 years younger than Kane so not really an option. I can see Kane playing until he's 36 and Toney will already be 33 anyway. Delap is more likely but he doesn't look like he's going to reach anything like Kane's level. It's difficult to replace a generational talent, but then we probably thought the same about Rooney at one time, then Kane kind of emerged from nowhere.

Lankshear is highly rated at Spurs. 🤷🏻

Zidane in 99 was still on his first contract after moving from Bordeaux , 98 was his stand out year and that’s when Madrid started sniffing around and couple years later the big bucks arrived

Del Piero was the main man in Serie A at that time

It would be interesting to see what the wages would be in 2005 for example
