With all due respect imo that’s Absolute rubbish and only ever mentioned by fans when their player misses out.

Consistency in a league against teams like Southampton, West Ham(other poor teams are available) where only 3 teams realistically could challenge Liverpool should never be weighted against the ability to perform in Europe’s elite level competition where your playing great teams like PSG, Bayern, Real, Barca etc is a much bigger competition and much more technical skill and acumen is needed rather than he ability to out run and bully poor defences.

Messi and Ronaldo are footballing freaks and have to be at their most average to come down the level of Salah and other players. People may not like that but either of those at their peak Salah, Henry and others cannot touch.

It’s also why I’ve said previously Balon D’Or isn’t anything that peaks most avid fans interest and is more now for the casual fan to wonder at. On that I’m out as we won’t agree on this topic.
Yeah, definitely prioritise the Champs League over the Prem, where Dembele scored against *checks notes* Liverpool... Arsenal... Man City... 😂

If the Ballon D’or was based on the final 5 minutes of a game then Salah is the clear winner lol. Iirc last season he seemed to be anonymous for 85 minutes then pop up with a last gasp winner. As good as that is it isn’t Ballon D’or winning material imo.

Real or contrived, I don't believe there is a better word in existence than "Thunderbastard" to describe certain goals.

I love how the ball appears to be just bobbling off his thighs and shins and yet he's still in complete control of it at the same time. Always baffled me. You'd have players like that in Sunday league sometimes, you tackle them, but it bounces off their knee and they keep the ball somehow.

There's something not quite right in individual awards being held in such high regard in a team sport. Its not always been like that. I remember when the likes of Kev Keegan and Michael Owen won, it was hardly mentioned.
That depends whether you do actually hold them in high regard :ROFLMAO:. It's a marketing tool, whether by FIFA, UEFA, the sponsors etc. Personally, I take as much notice of it as I do any other awards, whether in sport or the arts ie next to none. We all make our own minds up about these things and ultimately players are largely judged on trophies or by the love of their own fans. This is just glitter.

In all honesty, it got no headlines until it became a Messi v Ronaldo contest. Now they're both out of it, I imagine it will fade back into the shadows in a few years.

Not so sure about that. I remember it being a big thing when the likes of Rivaldo, Brazilian Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Weah, etc. were winning it. Almost a bigger thing back then.

Messi and CR7 Ronaldo were both immense. It certainly helped build their personal brands, but probably devalued the award a little when it was so uncompetitive outside those two

When it was the European Footballer of the Year it held a lot of prestige without it being overblown - players recognised it

Then it became the Messi/Ronaldo show and it didn’t matter what other players did they were winning it and it became a status symbol

Hopefully it can get past the hype but I doubt it
